A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 34088 is a dark, muted olive-brown with a warm undertone and low chroma. It reads as a subdued earth tone rather than a clean brown or a vivid olive, and the low LRV gives it a comparatively deep appearance.
For government, military, maintenance, fabrication, and restoration work, a match of this color is often used on spray-painted brackets, panels, enclosures, housings, racks, cabinets, carts, fixtures, and fabricated parts. It can also be used on hardware, vents, switch covers, speaker grilles, and similar small components where a low-key specification color is needed.
Because the color is relatively dark and muted, finish and substrate still matter. A smooth, evenly prepared surface will read more uniform, while texture, film build, and gloss level can make the warm cast and edge contrast more noticeable. Over darker or properly primed substrates, coverage is usually more straightforward than it would be with a much lighter color.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint is made to match the selected Fed Standard or AMS-STD-595 reference, not an official government-issued coating system. If the work is acceptance-sensitive or being repaired next to an older in-service finish, remember that the code alone does not account for aging, fade, gloss change, or project-specific approval requirements.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
AMS-STD-595 34088 defines the color reference target, not the full coating system. MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint can be ordered to a match of US Government AMS-STD-595 34088, but you still need to choose the product chemistry, gloss, surface preparation, and any project-specific approval requirements separately.
If your drawing, manual, or procurement package only calls out the color code, that tells you the target color, not whether the finish must be matte, satin, gloss, or part of a specific corrosion or approval system.
Not always. A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 34088 is a standard color reference, but an older in-service coating can look different because of fade, weathering, gloss loss, texture changes, or a different original paint system. MyPerfectColor paint matched to AMS-STD-595 34088 is best when the standard itself is the target.
For touch-up beside an aged part, the correct code may still show a visible difference. In that case, a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part may be the better choice if appearance consistency is critical.
The code is only one part of the final appearance. With AMS-STD-595 34088, gloss level, matte or satin finish, surface texture, film build, and the substrate can all change how the color reads after application.
To reduce surprises, match the color code and also select the finish and product type that fit the job. A color match on a smooth panel can look different on a rough, porous, or previously coated surface.
Reorder by the exact code, AMS-STD-595 34088, and keep the product type and finish the same. MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint can be used for repeat orders, but substrate, coating thickness, and application method can still change the final look.
For multi-part projects, record the exact color reference, format, and finish used on the first order so you can repeat the same specification later. That is the most practical way to improve consistency across parts and reorder cycles.
Dry-to-touch, recoat time, and full cure are different milestones for AMS-STD-595 34088 and depend on the specific MyPerfectColor product format you order. Use the product data sheet for the actual timing rather than assuming one standard schedule applies to every format.
Before you plan a repair or multi-coat job, confirm the product's recoat window and handling guidance. That helps avoid applying the next coat too soon or putting the part into service before the coating has fully cured.
