PMS 542 U is a Pantone Matching System color identified within the Pantone PMS collection. It presents a subdued blue character with a restrained, professional vibe that reads as calm, steady, technical, and understated.

The color appears mid-dark, with an LRV of 28.13. It leans cool with a blue base and slight violet tendency, shows moderate-to-low saturation, and includes a gray undertone that softens its overall appearance.

PMS 542 U works well in brand-facing displays, signage, and built elements where a quieter blue is preferred over vivid corporate blues. Its muted saturation can help reduce glare, though surface preparation, finish choice, and lighting conditions can influence how blue or gray the color ultimately appears.

Similar colors:

PMS 541 U: darker and more subdued, with greater gray influence.
PMS 543 U: lighter and softer, with reduced visual weight.
PMS 544 U: noticeably lighter and more neutral, approaching a pale blue-gray.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 542 U

What is the best way to compare PMS 542 U samples during color approval?

When approving PMS 542 U, compare samples under consistent lighting and on the same substrate you plan to use in production. Differences in light type and material can change how the color appears. Allow the paint to fully dry and cure before judging the match, since wet or partially cured coatings can look darker or glossier than the final result. Use the same Pantone reference and viewing conditions for all comparisons to avoid false differences.

How can I get help choosing the right paint type for PMS 542 U?

If you are unsure which paint type is best for PMS 542 U, contact MyPerfectColor before ordering. Share details about your substrate, exposure conditions, desired finish, and application method. This information helps determine whether spray paint or another format is appropriate for your branding or display project and reduces the risk of ordering a product that does not meet your expectations.

What should I expect for color consistency when reordering PMS 542 U?

PMS 542 U is matched to a Pantone reference, not to a previous batch of paint. For the most consistent results across repeat orders, use the same product type, sheen, and application process each time. Keep an approved sample from your first order and evaluate future orders against that same reference under similar lighting and viewing conditions.

Do undercoats or extra coats affect coverage for PMS 542 U?

PMS 542 U, like many Pantone colors, may require multiple coats to achieve even coverage, especially on contrasting substrates. Using a suitable undercoat can help improve uniformity and reduce the number of finish coats needed. Plan your application with coverage in mind and test on the actual material to confirm hide before committing to full production.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 542 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 542 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 542 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How do I convert PMS 542 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 542 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
