Pantone™ PMS 540 U

PMS 540 U is a defined Pantone color target, but its appearance can shift based on surface texture. Smooth substrates reflect light more evenly, which can make PMS 540 U appear cleaner and slightly darker. Textured or porous surfaces create more shadowing and scattered reflection, which can make the same color look lighter, flatter, or less saturated.

For brand-critical work, evaluate PMS 540 U on the actual substrate and finish you plan to use, rather than relying on a single sample applied to a different surface.

For PMS 540 U spray paint, multiple light coats generally produce more even color and coverage than a single heavy coat. Thin passes reduce the risk of striping, mottling, or uneven sheen that can affect how the Pantone color is perceived.

Allow proper flash time between coats so solvents can escape before the next layer is applied. This helps PMS 540 U settle to a more uniform appearance and reduces visual variation across the surface.

Yes. For brand approvals or high-visibility projects, ordering a small sample of PMS 540 U is strongly recommended. This allows stakeholders to review the color on the actual substrate, with the intended finish, under the installed lighting.

Sampling helps identify any perceived shifts before committing to larger quantities, reducing the risk of rework when PMS 540 U must meet formal brand signoff requirements.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
