Pantone™ PMS 424 U

PMS 424 U is a Pantone PMS color reference, and its appearance can shift depending on the light source and surroundings. Daylight, LED, fluorescent, and warm interior lighting can each change how the color is perceived, even when the paint formulation is the same.

To avoid surprises, evaluate a painted sample of PMS 424 U under the actual lighting where it will be used. This helps identify metamerism, where two colors match in one light but not another, before committing to full production.

The Pantone PMS 424 U code defines the color target, not the paint type. When ordering, you should choose an interior or exterior paint based on where the finished piece will be installed and the exposure it will face.

Interior paints are typically selected for controlled environments like displays or exhibits. Exterior paints are chosen when the painted item will be exposed to weather or UV light. In either case, review a sample in the intended setting to confirm the appearance meets your brand expectations.

Pantone PMS colors can include suffixes or series context that affect how the reference is interpreted. PMS 424 U should be ordered exactly as specified in your brand or project documentation.

Before ordering, verify that PMS 424 U is the correct reference for your application and that it matches the Pantone standard your team is using. This helps prevent mismatches caused by selecting a similar code or an unintended series.

When applying a PMS 424 U color match to metal or previously powder-coated parts, surface preparation and the existing finish matter. Cleaning, scuffing, and priming can affect how the color lays down and how uniform it appears.

Gloss level and substrate can also influence the final look, even with an accurate Pantone match. It is recommended to test PMS 424 U on a prepared sample part to confirm appearance before running full production.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.

We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
