PMS 419 U is a Pantone PMS color defined as a very dark charcoal-black neutral. It presents a restrained, serious visual tone with low reflectance and minimal chroma, supporting brand environments where subtlety and control are important.

The color appears extremely dark, with an LRV of 1.56, and reads as neutral to slightly cool in most lighting. It has very low saturation and minimal undertone, distinguishing it from true blacks by its softer, gray-based character.

PMS 419 U performs well in brand-facing applications where a near-black is preferred over a pure black. Careful surface preparation and consistent application can help avoid uneven appearance, especially on large panels or in higher-sheen finishes. Its softer darkness can become more noticeable across different substrates and lighting conditions.

Similar colors:
PMS 426 U: slightly lighter and more neutral, with a softer dark gray appearance.
PMS 433 U: darker and cooler, with a cleaner, more neutral black-gray character.
PMS Black 7 U: darker and more chromatic, with greater visual depth and less gray softness.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 419 U

How should I compare PMS 419 U paint to a Pantone book?

PMS 419 U is defined by Pantone as a visual reference standard, typically viewed in a printed Pantone Formula Guide on uncoated paper. When that color is reproduced as paint, differences are normal because paint is applied to three-dimensional surfaces with a chosen sheen and substrate.

Expect PMS 419 U paint to look darker or lighter than the Pantone book depending on sheen, surface texture, and lighting. Always evaluate a painted sample on the actual material and under the lighting where it will be used. The Pantone book should be treated as the target reference, not an expectation of an identical appearance.

How do I order paint matched to PMS 419 U on MyPerfectColor?

To order PMS 419 U, start by selecting the paint format that fits your application, such as spray paint or another available paint type. Next, choose the sheen and quantity based on how the color will be viewed and applied.

Because PMS 419 U is a Pantone color target rather than a paint formula, consider ordering a sample first if appearance approval is critical. This helps confirm the match on your specific substrate before committing to a full order.

How does surface texture affect the appearance of PMS 419 U?

Surface texture can significantly change how PMS 419 U is perceived. Smooth surfaces reflect light more evenly, often making the color appear deeper and more uniform. Textured or porous surfaces create shadows and uneven reflection, which can make the same color appear lighter, darker, or less consistent.

For brand-facing applications, always evaluate PMS 419 U on the actual material and texture being used to ensure the visual result meets expectations.

How much area does one spray can of PMS 419 U cover?

One spray can of PMS 419 U typically covers about 12 square feet per coat under normal conditions. Actual coverage depends on application technique, surface texture, and how many coats are needed for uniform appearance.

Darker Pantone colors like PMS 419 U often achieve coverage efficiently, but textured surfaces or brand-critical finishes may require additional coats. Estimating quantity based on test panels helps avoid running short.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 419 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 419 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 419 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

MyPerfectColor custom spray paint enables you to conveniently achieve a professional spray-smooth finish in any color in any sheen. See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 419 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 419 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
