Pantone™ PMS 385 U

Pantone PMS 385 U is a licensed color standard, not a paint formula. The PMS code defines a visual target used to communicate brand color, and accurate reproduction requires authorization and controlled matching processes.

MyPerfectColor is authorized to reproduce Pantone PMS colors in paint, which means PMS 385 U is matched to the official Pantone reference under defined viewing conditions. This reduces risk when the color will be evaluated against brand standards, approvals, or other Pantone-referenced elements.

Unlicensed or generic matches may appear close in isolation but can fall outside acceptable tolerance when compared directly to Pantone references or used across multiple brand assets.

When applying a Pantone PMS 385 U match to metal or powder-coated surfaces, surface preparation has a direct impact on appearance. Existing coatings should be clean and properly scuffed to promote adhesion and uniform color development.

Gloss level and undertone of the existing finish can influence how PMS 385 U is perceived. A high-gloss or dark base may make the color appear more saturated or darker than expected.

Because Pantone PMS colors are visual standards, evaluating a sprayed sample on the actual metal or coated part is strongly recommended before committing to production quantities.

Pantone PMS 385 U is commonly used in prototypes and concept models where visual alignment to brand standards is the primary goal. In these cases, the paint is intended to represent the brand color accurately rather than match a specific production coating or material.

For prototyping workflows, selecting a format such as spray paint or brush-applied paint depends on part size, detail, and turnaround time. Regardless of format, review the color under the lighting conditions where the prototype will be evaluated.

Sampling on the actual substrate used in the model helps confirm that PMS 385 U meets expectations before stakeholder or brand review.

Pantone PMS 385 U can be matched in paint for plastics, but plastics vary widely in surface energy and paint adhesion characteristics. Some materials require specific primers or adhesion-promoting steps to achieve reliable results.

Without proper preparation, the color may not bond well or may appear uneven. This is a material issue, not a Pantone color issue.

Testing PMS 385 U on the exact plastic used in your project is recommended before production to confirm adhesion, appearance, and coverage.

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

It sticks well to most surfaces including metal, plastics, powder-coatings, cabinets and primed or previously painted wood.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 385 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
