PMS 227 U is a Pantone PMS color identified within the Pantone Matching System and commonly specified for brand-controlled visual environments. It conveys a vivid, dramatic, high-energy impression with an intense and expressive presence.

The color appears very dark in value, with a low Light Reflectance Value of 9.01. It reads as warm and red-forward, with high saturation and a subtle blue-red undertone that can deepen under neutral lighting. Finish choice can influence perceived intensity, with higher sheens increasing contrast.

PMS 227 U works well in brand-facing displays, signage, and marketing installations where strong color presence is intentional. Because of its depth and saturation, a light or appropriately tinted primer can help improve coverage and uniformity. Lighting and finish selection should be evaluated with a real paint sample to confirm appearance.

Similar colors:
PMS 226 U: slightly lighter and more open, with increased brightness and less visual density.
PMS 228 U: darker and heavier, with reduced vibrancy and a more subdued magenta presence.
PMS 234 U: cooler and slightly more purple-leaning, with less red warmth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 227 U

What does the name PMS 227 U mean, and how should I order it correctly?

PMS 227 U is a specific Pantone Matching System color code. The number 227 identifies the color target, and the suffix U means it was originally defined on uncoated paper.

When ordering paint, always reference the full code PMS 227 U, not just a color name. Pantone names can be informal, but the code and suffix are what define the intended standard. Omitting the U or substituting a different suffix can result in a noticeably different match.

How does sheen selection affect the appearance of PMS 227 U paint?

Sheen has a direct impact on how PMS 227 U is perceived. Higher sheen finishes tend to look darker and more saturated, while lower sheen finishes can appear slightly lighter and less intense.

Choose sheen based on viewing distance, substrate, and how critical color intensity is for your application. If brand approval is required, it is best to evaluate PMS 227 U in the actual sheen on the intended surface before committing to full production.

How accurate can a paint match be for a saturated color like PMS 227 U?

PMS 227 U is a vivid, saturated Pantone color, which makes accurate matching more challenging than neutral tones. Differences in substrate, sheen, and lighting can all influence the final appearance.

MyPerfectColor produces paint matched to the Pantone PMS target, but minor visual variation is normal across materials. For high-visibility or brand-critical projects, ordering a sample to review PMS 227 U under actual lighting and conditions is strongly recommended.

What surface preparation is recommended before applying PMS 227 U matched paint?

Proper surface preparation helps PMS 227 U appear consistent and uniform. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of dust, oils, or residues that could interfere with adhesion.

On smooth or glossy substrates, light scuffing may improve bonding. Because saturated colors like PMS 227 U can have lower hide, applying a test area first allows you to confirm coverage and appearance before completing the project.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 227 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 227 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 227 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The need for primer for Pantone PMS 227 U depends on the type of paint, the substrate being painted and where it will be located. See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 227 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 227 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
