Pantone™ PMS 217 U

PMS 217 U is a Pantone PMS target color, not a paint formula, so coverage depends on the paint system, substrate, and finish you choose. Like many saturated Pantone colors, PMS 217 U can have lower hide than neutral colors. On light or uneven substrates, you may need additional coats to achieve a uniform appearance.

If consistent brand appearance is critical, plan for test panels and be prepared for more than one coat, especially on darker or porous surfaces.

Whether you need a primer for PMS 217 U depends on the substrate, the paint type, and the exposure conditions. Primers are often recommended on raw, porous, or previously coated surfaces to improve adhesion and help with uniform color appearance.

Yes. PMS 217 U is matched to a Pantone PMS color target, but changing the finish can significantly change how the color is perceived. Gloss and semi-gloss finishes tend to look brighter and more saturated, while matte or flat finishes can appear softer or darker.

Even when the color match is accurate, comparing PMS 217 U in different sheens can make it look like a different color. Always evaluate samples in the intended finish and lighting before final approval.

Ordering a standard Pantone PMS match for PMS 217 U is appropriate when the Pantone reference itself is the color target. This is common for brand-facing displays, signage, exhibits, prototypes, and marketing installations where visual alignment to the Pantone standard is the priority.

If the project has strict approval processes, unusual substrates, or very high visibility under specific lighting, you may want to confirm the appearance with samples first. For most branding and display applications, a standard PMS 217 U match is the correct starting point.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
