PMS 7649 C is a standardized color in the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, known for its deep, rich, and saturated purple-red appearance with a notably low light reflectance value. The color presents as bold, strong, and technical, with a focused and contemporary vibe. It is used where precise brand consistency and impactful color presence are operational priorities.

PMS 7649 C appears distinctly dark, with a low light reflectance value (LRV 7.05). The color presents a cool-leaning undertone, influenced by its position in the red-purple range. PMS 7649 C is highly saturated, delivering strong chromatic intensity. The color’s undertone includes hints of blue, giving it a restrained, modern edge rather than a warm or brick red feel. The appearance of PMS 7649 C may shift with finish (e.g., matte versus gloss), and dark, saturated colors like this can appear even deeper or more intense in lower-sheen finishes.

PMS 7649 C is operationally suited for brand signage, display components, and prototype creation where precise brand color alignment is required. Because it is dark and saturated, coverage may require multiple coats and careful surface preparation to ensure a uniform finish, especially over lighter substrates. The color’s appearance is sensitive to both lighting and finish, so assessment should be made under the final intended viewing conditions. It maintains visual impact relative to other saturated purple-reds, but appears deeper and slightly cooler than many commonly referenced alternatives.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 7649 C

How does surface texture influence the appearance of PMS 7649 C?

The perceived color of PMS 7649 C can shift noticeably depending on the surface texture of your material. Glossy textures reflect more light and may make PMS 7649 C appear slightly brighter and more saturated, while matte or textured surfaces can make this deep purple-red look darker or more muted due to diffuse reflection and increased shadowing. For consistent brand results, always assess PMS 7649 C in the intended finish and lighting, as differences in texture change how the color is perceived.

What should I consider about coverage and hide when ordering PMS 7649 C paint?

PMS 7649 C is a highly saturated, dark purple-red color, which means it may require more coats to achieve full and uniform coverage, especially over light or contrasting substrates. Plan to apply careful surface preparation and expect to use multiple coats for best color consistency. Testing a sample area is recommended so you can confirm results under your installation conditions before full application.

What do I need to know to use PMS 7649 C paint on plastic or low-energy surfaces?

When applying PMS 7649 C to plastics or low-surface-energy materials, proper adhesion can be a challenge. These surfaces may require a suitable primer or surface treatment before painting to ensure good bonding and color accuracy. It is best practice to test PMS 7649 C paint on your intended plastic substrate before a full project run to confirm performance and appearance under your final finish and conditions.

Is PMS 7649 C pantone-matched paint appropriate for touch-up or repair on existing items?

PMS 7649 C pantone-matched paint is designed for brand color reproduction in new applications such as displays, signage, or prototypes. It is not intended for touch-up or repair where you need to match an existing finish or coating. For touch-up-grade accuracy, send a physical sample or part for custom color matching to address variations in material, original finish, and age.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 7649 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
