A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 20460 reads as a muted warm tan with a soft yellow-brown undertone. It has a subdued, slightly earthy character rather than a clean beige look, and its mid-light depth can shift with sheen and substrate texture.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint made to match this Fed Standard 595C reference can be used on spray-paint projects where the code is the target, not an approximation. It is a practical choice for equipment panels, enclosures, brackets, vents, switch covers, trim pieces, fabricated housings, carts, racks, and other parts that need a consistent government-standard tan across mixed materials.
In spray form, this color can help coordinate touch-up work on metal, plastic, and composite parts such as cover plates, support hardware, speaker grilles, pipe covers, instrument housings, and training or mock-up components. Because the color is muted, it tends to read as a restrained neutral on small parts rather than a bright accent.
Coverage is usually more straightforward than with vivid colors, but finish still matters. A gloss application can make surface flaws, film build, and texture changes more noticeable, while a flatter finish can soften the color's warm cast. When matching an existing part, a code match may still differ from an aged or sun-altered coating, so sheen and condition should be considered along with the color reference.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 20460 is a color reference target. It tells you which government standard color you need, but it does not by itself define the paint chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion protection, application method, or any formal approval status.
When you order MyPerfectColor paint matched to Fed Std 595C 20460, you still need to choose the product format and coating system that fit your project requirements.
Not always. A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 20460 is the standard color reference, but an older coating can look different because of weathering, fade, sheen change, texture, film build, or differences in the original coating system.
If you are repairing next to an aged part, a standard-code match may still be the right starting point, but a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part or sample panel may be better if the repair is acceptance-critical or highly visible.
Dry time, recoat timing, handling time, and full cure depend on the specific MyPerfectColor product you select for Fed Std 595C 20460. The color code does not set those timings.
Use the product label or technical data for the exact format you order, and plan the job around the dry-to-touch, recoat, and cure steps for that chemistry and application method.
Yes. Gloss, matte, satin, texture, and film build can all change how Fed Std 595C 20460 appears after it is applied, even when the color match is correct.
If the surrounding part already has a specific finish, choose a product and sheen that fit that surface as closely as possible. The code alone does not describe the full visual result.
The SDS and product data apply to the specific MyPerfectColor product or chemistry you order. A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 20460 is the color reference, not the product documentation.
If your project is compliance-sensitive, verify the coating system, approval requirements, and any required project documentation separately. A color-code match does not by itself guarantee acceptance.
