PMS 661 C (Pantone Matching System) is a saturated, vivid blue with cool undertones, used predominantly in environments that require brand consistency and high visual impact. This color is frequently described as assertive, technical, modern, and highly visible. Its low LRV (4.1) makes it a notably dark and bold blue, commonly referenced in branding and identity standards for maximum color fidelity.

PMS 661 C appears very dark and intense, with a low LRV of 4.1 indicating limited light reflectance. The color exhibits a cool temperature with a strongly blue chroma. PMS 661 C shows high saturation, yielding maximum chromatic intensity. The undertone is a pure, slightly cool blue—free from substantial green or purple influence. The color is sensitive to finish; gloss levels and surface texture may noticeably impact perceived depth and brilliance.

PMS 661 C is frequently associated with corporate identity systems where high visibility, consistency, and brand recognition are critical. The color is often specified for signage, wayfinding, and display components requiring precise brand alignment.

PMS 661 C functions best in brand-driven environments or engineered displays needing a clear, authoritative blue. Careful consideration is needed in surface preparation: dark, saturated colors like PMS 661 C may require additional coats for coverage, especially over light or uneven substrates. The color’s appearance can shift drastically with varied finishes or lighting types; always evaluate using physical samples under actual conditions. It holds up as a strong, distinctive blue compared to other dark blues, characteristically drawing more attention and appearing cleaner.

Similar colors:
PMS 286 C: Slightly lighter and less saturated, appearing more neutral while maintaining a clean blue tone.

PMS 287 C: Similar in chroma but reads a hint warmer, with marginally higher reflectance.

PMS Reflex Blue C: Deeper and somewhat more purple in undertone, with a richer, more vivid perception.

The following examples reflect commonly cited branding associations and are based on publicly referenced design usage; they are illustrative, not exhaustive or exclusive.

PMS 661 C is widely cited as a defining blue in the corporate branding of organizations such as Hewlett-Packard (HP) and the European Union.

This color is frequently associated with university identity programs, such as the primary blue in the branding for Imperial College London.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 661 C

What does it mean to order PMS 661 C in paint if my standards specify this Pantone code?

Ordering PMS 661 C in paint means you are requesting a color match to the visual target of Pantone PMS 661 C as defined in the Pantone Matching System. This code identifies a specific blue for consistent communication across vendors, but it is not a coating formula or manufacturing process. The paint you receive is matched as closely as possible to this visual reference, but actual appearance depends on substrate, finish, and lighting. Always confirm that matching PMS 661 C visually is acceptable for your brand or project requirements.

What do I need to consider when applying PMS 661 C paint to plastic or low-energy surfaces?

Applying PMS 661 C paint to plastic or other low-energy surfaces requires careful preparation because these materials can be difficult for paint to adhere to. Plastics vary in composition and may need specialized primers or adhesion promoters before applying the color coat. For best results, test PMS 661 C paint on a sample of your actual substrate before production runs to check for adhesion and final appearance.

How will the finish affect how PMS 661 C looks in my branded application?

The finish or sheen you choose for PMS 661 C can significantly affect how the color appears in real-world use. Glossy finishes tend to make colors appear more vibrant and deep, while matte or satin finishes can make PMS 661 C look less intense or darker. The same formula of PMS 661 C will look different depending on whether it is flat, satin, or glossy, as well as on the substrate and lighting. Always specify and sample the finish you plan to use in final applications for accurate brand representation.

Should I order a sample of PMS 661 C for approval before full production?

It is strongly recommended to order a sample of PMS 661 C paint when formal brand approval is required or when working on large displays or multi-material projects. Evaluate the sample on your actual substrate and under the installed lighting conditions to check for both color accuracy and appearance. This step helps ensure the finished result meets brand standards and avoids issues with color perception or substrate compatibility during final installation.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 661 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 661 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 661 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
