PMS 456 C is a Pantone PMS system color recognized for its presence in branding, marketing, and display environments. The color presents as grounded, subdued, natural, professional, and adaptable. It is positioned as a mid-range yellow with a distinctly muted, olive-influenced cast, falling between golden yellow and khaki. The Pantone Matching System collection specifies this color for visually standardized reproduction across a range of materials where consistent brand color is critical.
PMS 456 C presents as a medium-dark yellow with an LRV of 21.97, indicating limited brightness and substantial depth.
The color has a warm tendency, influenced by an olive-like undertone.
PMS 456 C displays moderate chroma, appearing subdued rather than vividly saturated.
The undertone can shift toward green in certain lighting, contributing to an earthy, muted effect.
The color is moderately sensitive to finish: a matte finish will emphasize the muted aspect, while higher gloss may reveal more warmth or olive notes.
PMS 456 C is operationally useful when a yellow is required to retain warmth without high brightness or overt vibrancy. It works well in environments where soft but noticeable branding is needed, such as wayfinding signage or accent bands. Lighting and finish should be evaluated to control undertone shifts; in cool or dim lighting, olive tones will become more pronounced, while bright, warm light may enhance yellow qualities. Compared to more chromatic yellows, PMS 456 C offers more visual restraint, reducing risk of color fatigue or overwhelming visual presence.

When evaluating PMS 456 C samples, it is important to compare them under consistent and appropriate lighting, ideally in the environment where the final application will be seen. Make sure all samples are applied to the same type of substrate with the same finish, as substrate differences can change color appearance. Allow all coatings to fully dry or cure before making a final assessment, as color and finish can shift as the paint sets. Consistency in these comparison practices helps avoid approval errors and supports brand color accuracy.
Whether you need a primer for PMS 456 C depends on the type of paint, substrate material, and project requirements. Primers are generally needed for bare substrates such as metal, plastic, or wood to ensure adhesion and even color appearance. They may also be recommended if a strong color change is required or if the surface is porous. Always follow substrate and product-specific guidance, and consult paint system instructions for best results with PMS 456 C.
When specifying PMS 456 C for pop-ups or retail environments, consider the durability of the paint, the lighting where the color will be viewed, and whether a sample can be tested on your actual substrate. High-traffic or hands-on environments may require more durable finishes, while lighting conditions can shift the visual perception of PMS 456 C. Testing a sample before committing to a full installation helps confirm that the appearance is consistent with brand expectations under real site conditions.
For the best results when using spray paint matched to PMS 456 C, apply multiple thin coats rather than one heavy coat. Allow each coat to become dry to the touch before applying the next. This method reduces runs and helps achieve even coverage, especially since PMS 456 C may need extra attention for uniformity due to its muted and mid-range character. Proper application habits work together with color matching to produce a consistent, brand-correct look.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 456 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
