PMS 405 C is a Pantone Matching System color, categorized within the Pantone PMS collection. This color presents a low-light, muted character with gray-green qualities. The visual impression is restrained, technical, grounded, and distinctly utilitarian. PMS 405 C is frequently valued in contexts requiring a sober, non-distracting palette that supports clear graphics or subtle brand signaling rather than vibrant emphasis.

PMS 405 C appears dark in most lighting environments, with an LRV of 10.66. The color reads as cool to neutral, displaying muted olive and gray tones. PMS 405 C offers subdued saturation, lacking vividness, which contributes to its understated presence. The undertone is primarily gray, with secondary greenish-olive aspects evident under daylight or cool lighting. The color may show noticeable shifts based on finish (matte will further reduce prominence, while gloss can accent minor olive undertones).

PMS 405 C is often used in branded wayfinding and signage systems that require low-contrast, non-reflective color fields. The color is specified in industrial design projects or architectural components where an unobtrusive, technical appearance is needed.

PMS 405 C works effectively in visual environments where dark, non-saturated neutrals help suppress attention to background elements or structural components. For accurate visualization, evaluate large-scale samples under project lighting conditions, as subtle shifts can occur between artificial and natural illumination. Matte or low-gloss finishes tend to reinforce its subdued, gray-green effect, while higher gloss may heighten greenish undertones. When compared to other dark grays or olives, PMS 405 C is less visually assertive and better suppresses chromatic distraction. Surface preparation must ensure even absorption to prevent patchiness, especially in broad, flat applications.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 405 C

How does the texture of a surface affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 405 C?

The surface texture can change how Pantone PMS 405 C appears in your project. On smooth and glossy surfaces, PMS 405 C may reflect more light and show subtle olive undertones. Matte or textured finishes reduce reflectivity and may make the color seem even more subdued or darker. Texture can also cause variations in shadowing, which can amplify the color's muted gray-green character. For accurate results, use a sample with the intended texture and assess it under the same lighting as the final installation.

What product formats are available for Pantone PMS 405 C and how should I choose the right one?

Pantone PMS 405 C can be ordered as custom spray paint, paint pens, brush-in-cap bottles, and other paint formats suitable for branding and display fabrication. The format you select should align with your project requirements: spray paint is typically chosen for even coverage on signage or displays, paint pens offer control for prototyping or detail work, and brush-in-cap bottles suit small displays or testing substrates. If you are unsure, consider the scale of your application and whether a smooth or textured finish matches your brand standards. Always confirm format compatibility with your intended substrate before ordering.

How do I select the correct paint type for Pantone PMS 405 C for interior versus exterior use?

When using Pantone PMS 405 C for branded displays or signage, choose an interior or exterior paint type based on the location and exposure of the application. For indoor environments, interior paint generally fits most brand and exhibit use cases. For outdoor or high-traffic installations, select an exterior-rated coating to help address exposure and durability needs. Consider the required finish and the substrate to ensure the color reads as intended. Always review project requirements and brand approval processes before finalizing your order.

Do I need to take any special steps to achieve good coverage with Pantone PMS 405 C?

Pantone PMS 405 C is a dark and muted color, so it typically provides good coverage on prepared surfaces. However, coverage and hide can vary if the substrate is uneven or highly absorbent, making surface preparation important. For best results, use a primer that matches the expected finish and color value, especially on light or very porous substrates. Applying multiple thin coats helps ensure a uniform appearance without patchiness. Always test on a sample panel before full application to confirm appearance under your lighting conditions.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 405 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
