PMS 398 C is part of the Pantone PMS collection, which standardizes color communication for brand and marketing applications across industries. This color presents a distinctive yellow-green appearance with a direct, functional, and technical character. Its vibe is bold, utilitarian, deliberate, and signal-oriented, making it suitable for situations where clarity and visual separation are operationally useful.

PMS 398 C exhibits a mid-range lightness (LRV 34.05), providing noticeable visibility without being overly bright. The color has a strong yellow-green cast, falling near the mid-point between yellow and green on the hue spectrum. This color demonstrates notable saturation, leading to high chromatic intensity and distinctiveness. PMS 398 C typically displays a warm undertone due to its prominent yellow influence. The perceived saturation and brightness of PMS 398 C can be noticeably altered by changes in finish (matte versus gloss) and by lighting conditions.

PMS 398 C functions effectively in branded environments or wayfinding systems where distinct visibility and strong color identity are required. It should be evaluated under the intended lighting, as its yellow-green intensity can shift in cool fluorescent or warm incandescent settings. Gloss finishes may enhance vibrancy; matte finishes may reduce glare but can also mute perceived saturation. As with many highly saturated greens and yellows, coverage may require additional coats for uniform appearance, and color should be confirmed on a physical sample before production to ensure visual intent matches expectations.

Similar colors:
PMS 383 C – Slightly lighter and less intense, with a more subdued appearance overall.

PMS 397 C – A more muted and earthy yellow-green, less chromatic and somewhat more olive in tone.

PMS 3975 C – Darker and less saturated, with a noticeable olive-brown undertone compared to the high chroma of PMS 398 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 398 C

What general safety and VOC considerations apply when using paint products matched to PMS 398 C?

Safety and VOC requirements for PMS 398 C depend on the specific paint format you select, such as spray paint, paint pens, or other options. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for each product and follow all recommended handling guidelines. Use protective equipment as directed, ensure sufficient ventilation, and observe all instructions for storage and disposal. Product features like VOC content will vary by coating type and should be evaluated for your application needs.

When is it appropriate to order a standard Pantone match for PMS 398 C?

Ordering a standard Pantone match for PMS 398 C is appropriate when your project requires visual brand accuracy for displays, signage, prototypes, or marketing installations. This approach is suited for applications where the Pantone PMS color code is the primary reference and color consistency is the main objective, rather than situations requiring exact restoration of an existing finish. Always confirm the chosen match format is suitable for your intended substrate and usage environment.

How can finish or sheen affect the appearance of PMS 398 C in real-world applications?

PMS 398 C can appear noticeably different depending on the finish or sheen selected for your project. Gloss finishes will increase perceived vibrancy and brightness, making the yellow-green more eye-catching, while matte finishes reduce glare but can mute the saturation, resulting in a more subdued look. Evaluate PMS 398 C samples with your chosen finish under the actual lighting conditions where the color will be displayed to ensure the visual effect matches your brand intent.

When should you use a primer with paint matched to PMS 398 C?

The need for a primer when using PMS 398 C depends on factors like the type of paint, substrate material, and environment. Primers are generally recommended for uncoated surfaces, materials that need enhanced adhesion, or when coverage is important, especially since saturated yellow-green colors like PMS 398 C may need additional coats for a uniform appearance. Consult product-specific primer guidance and test samples before full application to ensure the best brand-consistent results.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 398 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
