PMS 228 C is a color in the Pantone Matching System (PMS) collection, identified for its deep, bold appearance and strong character. With a notably dark visual presence and a pronounced cool undertone, this color conveys attributes such as boldness, sophisticated energy, technical precision, and depth. PMS 228 C frequently serves roles where a commanding, memorable effect is required in environmental branding, marketing displays, and design prototypes.

- PMS 228 C presents as a very dark color by general visual assessment and an LRV of 6.24.
- The color exhibits a distinctly cool tendency with purple undertones, avoiding any overt warmth.
- PMS 228 C maintains high chroma, resulting in strong, vivid color saturation.
- The undertone is anchored in a blue-violet range, producing a subtle but clearly perceptible cool effect.
- The color may shift in appearance based on finish; gloss finishes can intensify both saturation and perceived depth, while matte surfaces may make it appear slightly softer and more muted.

PMS 228 C is suitable for applications where a dark, saturated purple is needed to convey authority, modernity, or creative distinctiveness in branding and display environments. It performs best when used in controlled lighting, as its low light reflectance can cause it to appear nearly black or lose hue clarity in poor light. Users should anticipate possible coverage challenges typical of highly saturated, dark colors, and surface prep should aim for uniformity to avoid unevenness. When specifying this color, compare finishes and lighting closely, as gloss or direct illumination can make it appear more vibrant than in diffused or matte conditions.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 229 C – A slightly darker, even deeper purple that appears almost black; less chromatic than PMS 228 C.
  • PMS 254 C – A lighter, more vibrant purple that reads brighter and slightly warmer than PMS 228 C.
  • PMS 2607 C – A similarly deep purple but with a more pronounced blue undertone, making it cooler and a touch less saturated.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 228 C

How should I specify PMS 228 C to ensure I order the correct Pantone color?

To order PMS 228 C correctly, always provide the exact Pantone code, including the full designation and suffix (for example, 'PMS 228 C'). Pantone uses both a name and a code to identify each color, but the code distinguishes the specific color formulation and can include important details such as the series or finish. Relying on just the name or an incomplete code can result in receiving the wrong color. Always confirm the suffix matches your brand standards or design guide before ordering.

What are my options if I need PMS 228 C paint quickly for a brand deadline?

If you require PMS 228 C paint on a short timeline, you can select expedited production options during checkout. Availability and processing time for expedited orders can vary depending on product type and capacity. For critical deadlines, contact MyPerfectColor before ordering to confirm your timeline can be met. Advance notice helps ensure production and delivery can align with your project requirements.

Will PMS 228 C paint look exactly like the color in my Pantone book?

PMS 228 C is formulated to match the Pantone reference as closely as possible. However, the actual appearance can differ from a Pantone book sample due to variations in paint sheen, substrate, and viewing conditions. Pantone books use a specific printing process and material that may not match every paint application or surface. It is best practice to sample PMS 228 C paint on your actual materials and under final lighting to validate approval before a full project. This approach ensures the color meets your brand and visual standards.

How can I get help selecting the best paint type for PMS 228 C?

If you are unsure which paint type is best for your PMS 228 C project, contact MyPerfectColor with details about your substrate, exposure conditions, and finish requirements. Their team will recommend the most appropriate product format, such as spray paint, paint pens, or other qualifying options, to meet your branding and display goals. Providing this information supports a successful and brand-aligned outcome.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 228 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 228 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 228 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 228 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 228 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
