PMS 138 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color in the Pantone PMS collection. This color presents a vivid, medium-dark orange with a distinctly warm, energetic vibe. Its appearance is saturated, strong, and attention-grabbing, while also maintaining clarity and consistency in various lighting conditions. Common descriptors for this color include bold, dynamic, communicative, and unmistakable.

PMS 138 C appears as a medium-dark orange; the LRV of 32.8 indicates moderate reflectance and visual weight. The color leans strongly warm, with prominent orange-yellow undertones. PMS 138 C exhibits high saturation, resulting in strong color intensity and visual impact. Undertones are orange with a touch of gold, providing vibrancy without being overly harsh. The color’s perceived brightness and chromaticity are sensitive to finish; matte finishes can slightly mute vibrancy, while gloss enhances its strength.

PMS 138 C works effectively where a clear, branded orange is required for maximum visibility and recognition, especially in branded display environments, focal graphics, and product prototypes. It holds its identity well under standard display lighting, but may appear richer under warm lighting and more muted in diffuse, cool environments. Highly saturated colors like this require even surface preparation and may need multiple coats for full, uniform coverage, especially over lighter substrates. When compared to other oranges in the PMS system, PMS 138 C sits in the mid-range for depth, neither as pale as light oranges nor as deep as red-oranges.

Similar colors:
PMS 137 C – Slightly lighter and more yellow; appears brighter and less deep than PMS 138 C.

PMS 152 C – Slightly darker and browner; reads more muted and less vibrant.

PMS 144 C – More chromatic and redder; has a deeper, red-orange character compared to PMS 138 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 138 C

What coverage and hide considerations should I be aware of when using PMS 138 C for brand projects?

PMS 138 C is a highly saturated, medium-dark orange Pantone color. Bright colors like this often have lower hide than less saturated paints, which means you may need additional coats to achieve full, even coverage. For best results, ensure that surfaces are well-prepared and primed, especially if painting over lighter substrates. Plan for multiple coats to reach a uniform, brand-consistent appearance with PMS 138 C.

Can I use paint matched to PMS 138 C for touch-up or repair work?

Paint matched to PMS 138 C is intended for brand color reproduction in new marketing, display, and fabrication projects. If you need touch-up grade accuracy for repairing an existing part described as PMS 138 C, the best practice is to send a physical sample of the actual part for a custom match. This ensures the touch-up will align visually with installed materials and finishes, since Pantone codes alone do not specify all factors affecting final appearance.

What is the difference between the Pantone color name and code for PMS 138 C, and how should I order it?

PMS 138 C refers to a specific color in the Pantone Matching System, where 'PMS' marks the system, '138' identifies the color, and 'C' typically indicates the coated version. To order the correct color, always use the full Pantone code, including suffixes like 'C' for coated, instead of relying on descriptive names. This minimizes risk of ordering the wrong product and ensures you get the exact brand standard for PMS 138 C.

How should I use PMS 138 C paint samples in a brand approval workflow?

When PMS 138 C needs to meet specific brand standards for a major project, order a sample of the paint in your desired finish and apply it to the actual substrate you will use. Review the sample under the lighting conditions where the final result will be installed. This process allows stakeholders to approve the appearance before full production, ensuring color accuracy for marketing and display work involving PMS 138 C.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 138 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 138 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 138 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
