A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 26280 reads as a medium-depth gray with a faint green cast and very low chroma. It is subdued rather than colorful, with a neutral, utilitarian character that can shift slightly with sheen, texture, and substrate color.
MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to this government color reference can be used for touch-up and repaint work on panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, cabinets, carts, vents, switch covers, and other fabricated parts that need to stay aligned with the specified standard. It is also useful for mock-ups, training pieces, and coordinated components made from metal, plastic, or composite surfaces.
Because the color is low in chroma, coverage is generally more forgiving than with vivid colors, but finish still matters. A smoother or glossier application can make the gray-green undertone read a little more clearly, while rougher substrates may mute it. Surface preparation, film build, and sheen all affect how the match appears after spraying.
For acceptance-sensitive work, remember that a standard reference match is not the same as matching an aged in-service coating. Weathering, fading, abrasion, and gloss change can make the surrounding part look different even when the reference code is correct, so adjacent touch-up may still show a shift from the existing finish.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 26280 *
What does Fed Std 595C 26280 specify, and what does it not specify?
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 26280 is a government color reference target. It tells you which color to order, but it does not by itself define the paint chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion protection system, or any formal approval status.
For ordering, treat MyPerfectColor paint matched to Fed Std 595C 26280 as a color match to the selected government standard, then choose the product format and coating approach that fit your project requirements.
Will a match of Fed Std 595C 26280 look right next to an older coated part?
Not always. Even if the color match to Fed Std 595C 26280 is correct, an in-service coating can look different because of fading, weathering, prior repairs, texture, or sheen changes.
If the repair is beside an aged or highly visible finish, a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part may be a better choice than matching the standard chip alone.
How should I plan dry time and recoat timing for Fed Std 595C 26280 paint?
The right timing depends on the specific MyPerfectColor product format you order for Fed Std 595C 26280. Dry-to-touch, recoat window, handling time, and full cure are different milestones.
Use the product label and application instructions for the exact format you choose, and plan the work around temperature, film thickness, and the number of coats needed for your project.
Is Fed Std 595C 26280 appropriate for equipment parts, brackets, enclosures, or prototypes?
Yes, if your project is specification-driven and calls for a government color reference like Fed Std 595C 26280. This type of match is commonly used for maintenance parts, fabricated components, enclosures, color-coded hardware, mock-ups, and prototypes.
Choose the product format based on the substrate and application method, and confirm any project-specific requirements if the work is acceptance-critical.
Will the appearance of Fed Std 595C 26280 change if I choose a different finish?
Yes. The same Fed Std 595C 26280 color can look different depending on gloss, matte, satin, texture, and film build.
The code defines the color target, but the final appearance also depends on the finish and how the paint is applied. If appearance matters, match the finish to the existing surface or the project specification, not just the color code.
