A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 12199 is a vivid warm red-orange with strong chroma and a fairly deep value. It reads as a saturated, energetic color rather than a muted rust or brown, and the low LRV means it can look substantial on the part instead of washed out.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in this government color reference can be used on equipment panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, switch covers, machine guards, carts, tool handles, fabricated parts, and other small sprayable components where a specific Fed Std 595C target is needed. It is also practical for color-coded hardware, mock-ups, and maintenance touch-up where the part must align visually with a specified standard.
Because the color is highly saturated and relatively dark, coverage over a dark or uneven substrate may take more than one coat, especially if the base color differs strongly. Finish and film build can shift how bright or deep the color appears, and gloss coatings can make surface texture, repair edges, and sanding marks more noticeable.
For specification-driven work, a match to the standard reference is not always the same as matching an aged, weathered, or previously painted part. If the existing surface has faded, oxidized, or changed sheen, the new coating may read differently even when the code is correct, so project-specific approval or an existing-part comparison can matter.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 12199 is a government color reference target, not a complete coating specification. When you order MyPerfectColor paint matched to Fed Std 595C 12199, you are selecting the color match only. Chemistry, gloss, surface preparation, corrosion protection, application method, and any required approval or acceptance criteria still need to be handled separately for the project.
Not always. Fed Std 595C 12199 defines the target color, but an older in-service coating can look different because of fade, weathering, sheen change, texture, contamination, or past repairs. If the surrounding finish is aged or highly visible, a standard-code match may still read differently from the existing part. In those cases, matching the existing surface or repainting the full part can be the safer choice.
Fed Std 595C 12199 only answers the color question. The right product format depends on where and how the part will be used. For interior use, exterior exposure, abrasion, chemical exposure, or difficult substrates, you should choose the coating type that fits the service environment, not just the color code. MyPerfectColor offers custom-matched paint in formats that can be selected to fit the job.
No. The color code Fed Std 595C 12199 defines the color target, but gloss level, surface texture, and film build can change how the finished coating appears. A gloss finish can look deeper and more reflective, while a matte or satin finish can make the same color read differently. If the appearance needs to match an existing part, confirm the finish as well as the color reference.
Plan around the specific product format you order, not the color code alone. Fed Std 595C 12199 identifies the color reference, but dry-to-touch time, recoat window, handling time, and full cure are product dependent. Follow the instructions for the exact MyPerfectColor paint format you choose so the coating can be handled and recoated correctly for your project.
