A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 12246 reads as a strong orange-red with a warm yellow bias, high saturation, and a fairly deep value. It is not a muted rust tone; it is a clearer, more forceful color with noticeable warmth and visual intensity.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched spray paint in this government reference is suited to specification-driven touch-up and color coding on equipment panels, brackets, housings, electrical enclosures, fabricated parts, safety covers, rail hardware, carts, and small fixtures. It can also be used on mock-ups, training aids, prototype components, and other sprayed parts where a repeatable Fed Standard 595C target is needed across metal, plastic, or coated substrates.
Because this color is saturated and relatively dark, surface texture, film build, and sheen can affect how it reads after application. Coverage over dark or uneven substrates may still show contrast at edges or repairs, and gloss level can make the color appear stronger or slightly deeper. Matching the standard reference does not always match an aged in-service coating, so adjacent weathered parts may look different even when the code is correct.
Fed Std 595C 12246 defines a color target, not a coating system or approval status, so MyPerfectColor supplies a custom match to the selected reference rather than an official government-issued paint. For acceptance-critical or spec-sensitive work, a project-specific sample or match to the existing part may be needed.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 12246 is a government color reference target. It tells you which color to match, but it does not by itself define the paint chemistry, gloss, surface preparation, coating system, corrosion protection, or formal approval status.
MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to the selected Fed Standard reference. If your project also requires a specific primer, finish level, or compliance process, that needs to be selected separately.
Not always. An older coating can look different because of weathering, fading, wear, sheen change, texture, or a different original coating system. Even if Fed Std 595C 12246 is the correct reference, the repaired area can still stand out next to an aged surface.
If the repair is visible or acceptance-critical, it is often better to match the existing part, compare a sample panel, or repaint the full part instead of relying on the code alone.
Yes, if your drawing, maintenance document, or procurement package calls for Fed Std 595C 12246 as the target color. This type of reference is commonly used for brackets, panels, housings, enclosures, training aids, mock-ups, and color-coded hardware where the goal is to stay consistent with a specified government color standard.
MyPerfectColor can provide a custom-matched paint for that reference. If the project also requires a particular approval path or coating system, follow the project specification first.
For Fed Std 595C 12246, start with clean, dry, grease-free surfaces. Remove rust, loose paint, and contamination. On sound existing coatings, scuff sanding usually helps create adhesion, but you should also confirm compatibility on a small test area before doing the full job.
Use a primer that fits the substrate and the service environment, especially on bare metal or where corrosion protection matters. If the part has an unknown existing coating, test first rather than assuming the new paint will bond well.
The color code tells you the target color, not the durability requirements. For Fed Std 595C 12246, choose the product format and coating type based on the substrate, abrasion exposure, chemical exposure, and whether the part will be used indoors, outdoors, or in service conditions that are harder on the finish.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint is available in spray paint and other formats for specification-driven color work. If you are unsure which format fits your project, start with the coating system that matches the part and its environment, not the color code alone.
MyPerfectColor uses an acrylic enamel which is a fast-drying durable coating suitable for interior or exterior use.
