RAL is a color target, not a coating process. Decide based on what will be inspected and how visible the area is.

• Use standard RAL 7047 Telegrey 4 when:
  • Cross-material coordination is acceptable (e.g., liquid paint near textured powder where sheen/texture already differ).
  • Repairs are low-criticality (small chips, functional protection).
  • Acceptance is against the RAL standard (fan deck/reference), not an existing part.
• Request a sample/OEM match when:
  • Surfaces are high-visibility or large-area repaints.
  • Inspection will compare to existing parts/assemblies, not the RAL standard.
  • A known OEM powder code exists, including gloss/texture that must be followed.
  • Sheen and surface texture must align closely with adjacent parts.

Risk control: On the PO, state the acceptance target ("match RAL 7047 standard" vs "match this part") and include gloss/texture requirements. For critical work, send a representative part/coupon and request a sample-based match approval before production.

Not always. RAL 7047 defines the color, but powder coatings vary by gloss and texture, and different powder chemistries/cure can shift appearance. A liquid paint matched to the RAL standard may look different next to a textured or a different-gloss powder coat.

If seamless appearance is required:

• Identify the original powder details (manufacturer, product code, gloss level, texture).
• Provide a physical part/panel for a sample-based match and specify acceptance against that part.
• State finish requirements on the order (e.g., color: RAL 7047 target, gloss: specify level, texture: describe or sample).

If close visual harmony is sufficient and inspection is against the RAL standard, ordering RAL 7047 Telegrey 4 as a standard reference is appropriate, with minor sheen/texture differences expected.

• Paint pen: Pinpoint chips/scratches up to roughly 1-2 mm wide; edges and fastener heads; quick field work.
• Brush bottle: Chips up to coin-size; flat/satin surfaces where minor brush marks are acceptable; small parts off-line.
• Aerosol spray: Larger areas, blends over panel edges, or textured powder-coated parts to avoid ridging from brush/pen. Also best when you need to control overspray and match sheen over an area.

Additional guidance: If bare metal or corrosion is present, spot-prime with an appropriate primer before color. Select a sheen close to the surrounding area to reduce contrast. For critical cosmetic zones, make a small test application to confirm appearance before proceeding.

• Clean: Wash with mild detergent, rinse, dry. Solvent-wipe to remove oils/silicones. Avoid silicone polishes near the repair area.
• Remove defects: Eliminate loose coating and rust. Feather damaged edges. Lightly scuff surrounding finish (e.g., 320-600 grit) to promote adhesion, then wipe clean.
• Prime as needed: Bare steel/aluminum/galvanized requires a compatible primer. Plastics may need an adhesion promoter. Allow proper dry times.
• Mask and condition: Mask adjacent areas. Apply in suitable conditions (stable temperature, low dust/humidity). Shake/mix thoroughly.
• Apply: Make a test spot to confirm appearance versus your acceptance target (RAL standard or existing part). Apply light coats, observing recoat windows. Do not flood low-sheen or textured finishes.
