What to include with a sample:

• Clean, flat area showing the intended color (unfaded if possible)
• Desired gloss level (matte/satin/gloss or gloss units if known)
• Texture requirement (smooth, fine texture, etc.) and substrate/coating type if known

A custom match targets your sample rather than the RAL standard. Exact matches to unknown coatings cannot be guaranteed from code alone, and custom work may add lead time.

Powder coats often have orange peel and a specific gloss, while liquid touch-up tends to lay smoother. Even with the same RAL 7009 color target, differences in texture and sheen change how the color is perceived.

• Smoother, glossier coatings can read darker or cleaner; textured, lower-gloss coatings can look lighter or grayer.
• Acceptance risk increases when comparing a smooth touch-up against a textured panel side-by-side.

How to mitigate:

• Specify the gloss level you need and aim to keep it close to the original finish.
• If appearance is critical, provide a sample or the OEM powder code for a texture- and gloss-aware match.
• For low-criticality chips, standard RAL 7009 in the closest gloss is usually acceptable; validate on a small area first.

Color appearance can shift under different light sources (daylight, LED, fluorescent, sodium). Materials that match under one light may differ under another (metamerism), especially across different finishes or materials.

• Identify the lighting under which acceptance will occur and evaluate samples under that lighting.
• For strict acceptance, state viewing conditions on the purchase order (light type and location) and request an approval spray-out/drawdown.
• Inspect the standard, sample, and part side-by-side at the intended viewing angle before committing production.
• For non-critical repairs or mixed textures, a standard RAL 7009 match is generally sufficient.

However, keep in mind that our version of RAL7009 Green Grey is based on the color swatch contained in the official RAL color book.
