RAL 5022 Night Blue Paint

• Standard RAL is appropriate for cross-material coordination (metal vs plastic) where finishes naturally differ, small chips and functional touch-ups, or when visual harmony is sufficient.
• Request a match to your specific coating/part when surfaces are high-visibility, large areas are being repainted, inspection criteria are strict, or an OEM powder code is specified.

Decision check:

• If acceptance will be judged against a fan deck or RAL 5022 standard chip order standard RAL 5022 in the required sheen.
• If acceptance will be judged against an existing part/assembly provide a physical sample or the exact OEM powder reference for a custom match.

Risk note: RAL defines color, not coating process. Powder vs liquid may differ in gloss and texture (orange peel vs smooth). With this dark, low-LRV color, small gloss shifts are highly visible. If sheen/texture matter, specify them on the PO or supply a sample for matching.

Select primer by substrate and service. Using a dark gray primer helps hiding and consistency for this low-LRV shade.

• Bare carbon steel: Abrade/clean, then epoxy or zinc-rich primer as required by service. Finish with compatible epoxy/urethane color coat in RAL 5022.
• Galvanized steel: Clean/pretreat (e.g., sweep blast or mordant wash), use a galvanized-compatible primer (wash/epoxy), then topcoat.
• Aluminum: Degrease and abrade or apply chromate/non-chromate conversion, then epoxy primer before topcoat.
• Previously powder-coated surfaces (touch-up): Clean, scuff to a uniform dull finish, spot prime with adhesion-promoting primer if needed, then apply RAL 5022 topcoat. Expect sheen/texture differences vs surrounding powder.
• Plastics (field parts): Verify resin type; use plastic adhesion promoter/primer approved for that plastic before topcoat.

Note: Primer color and film build can influence perceived color and gloss. For critical matches, keep primer, DFT, and sheen consistent with the approved sample and specify them on the purchase order.

As a dark color, RAL 5022 typically reaches hiding efficiently over a dark gray primer.

• Over dark gray primer: Plan 1-2 color coats to full hiding and uniform gloss (apply to the product's specified DFT).
• Over light substrates/primers or patchy repairs: Plan 2-3 color coats to eliminate read-through.
• Edges/welds and repairs may require an extra pass to reach target DFT.

Acceptance tips: Judge color only after full hiding and recommended cure-gloss often develops on cure, and sheen differences are especially visible on this low-LRV shade. If inspection is strict, document primer color, DFT, and sheen so production matches the approved standard.

Use standard RAL 5022 Night Blue when downtime or corrosion risk outweighs cosmetic precision, and limit application to small, localized areas. Clearly note it as a temporary measure.

• Temporary path: Order standard RAL 5022 in the closest available sheen to the surrounding finish, execute the repair, and record product/lot used. Expect visible differences in gloss/texture next to powder-coated parts.
• Permanent path: For visible surfaces or larger areas, obtain a custom match to the actual part or OEM powder code, and align primer, DFT, sheen, and texture with the approved sample.

To avoid disputes, state on the work order whether acceptance is against the RAL standard or the existing part, and whether this repair is temporary or final.
