RAL5020 Ocean Blue is a very deep, distinctly cool blue-green from the RAL Classic collection, designed for industrial and architectural projects requiring a saturated, technical blue with a subtle green undertone. Its very dark character is due to L (22.59) and LRV (3.68), resulting in minimal reflectance and strong visual impact on larger surfaces. With a (-21.16) and b (-12.65) indicating its cool, blue-green nature, a hue angle of 210.87 degrees, and moderate chroma (24.65), this color remains visually saturated and maintains a teal presence versus a pure blue. RAL5020 Ocean Blue is highly sensitive to finish-high gloss accentuates its depth, while matte finishes may cause the color to appear nearly black, especially in low-light settings. Applications often include machinery, storage tanks, piping, structural steel, and exterior metal items in industrial and transport facilities, as well as field touchups for powder-coated or OEM-specified assemblies. Functional and safety surfaces may use this color to visually designate specific zones due to its technical clarity and distinct low reflectance. When matching strict visual standards, a sample paint-out is recommended due to the significant impact of surface and finish.

Insights
- With an LRV of 3.68 and L of 22.6, the color appears almost black in dim light or on high-gloss surfaces.
- The negative a (-21.2) and b (-12.7) produce strong green-blue saturation, visible under good illumination.
- Chroma (24.65) provides noticeable color identity, avoiding the muddiness of many ultra-dark blues.

Frequently Asked Questions About RAL 5020 Ocean Blue Paint

When should I send a sample instead of ordering a standard RAL 5020 Ocean Blue?

Send a physical sample or provide an OEM powder code when acceptance will be judged against an existing coated part, not just the RAL standard. This is especially important with dark colors like RAL 5020, where sheen and texture differences are very visible.

  • Send a sample or OEM code if: the surface is high-visibility, the area is large, inspection is strict, or you know the original OEM powder series/code.
  • Standard RAL match is typically sufficient for: cross-material coordination where sheen/texture already differ, small touch-ups or functional protection, or when close visual harmony is acceptable.

What to include with your sample/order to avoid rework:

  • Acceptance target: "match the RAL Classic standard" or "match the installed part."
  • Desired sheen/texture (e.g., matte/satin/gloss or a range) and any texture/orange-peel expectations.
  • Substrate and application method (liquid spray, aerosol, etc.).
  • Any known OEM powder brand/series/code and the required environment/service conditions.
Our PO says "Finish: RAL 5020 Ocean Blue." What will you supply and what else do you need?

RAL 5020 defines the color target, not the coating process. By default we tint the selected coating to the RAL standard; however, sheen and texture must be specified if they affect acceptance. Without that information, a liquid paint may not visually match an existing powder-coated part, even though both are RAL 5020.

To avoid ambiguity, include the following on the PO:

  • Color: "RAL 5020 Ocean Blue."
  • Acceptance reference: "match RAL Classic standard" or "match existing part."
  • Sheen/texture requirement (e.g., matte/satin/semi-gloss/gloss; any texture/orange peel expectations).
  • Substrate and application method (spray/aerosol/brush) and coating chemistry if required.
  • Any known OEM powder manufacturer/series/code, or provide a physical sample for custom match.

If acceptance is against the installed part, send a sample. If acceptance is against the RAL standard, state that and choose a sheen that meets your spec.

Why doesn't liquid paint in RAL 5020 Ocean Blue look the same as my RAL 5020 powder-coated parts?

Color is the same target, but appearance changes with surface texture and sheen. Powder often has orange peel/texture and a defined gloss; liquid coatings may be smoother or a different sheen. On dark colors like RAL 5020, a glossier surface looks deeper/darker and a textured surface looks lighter/softer, so parts can appear off-color side by side.

How to reduce mismatch risk:

  • Define the acceptance reference: RAL standard vs. the existing powder-coated part.
  • Specify the desired sheen (matte/satin/semi-gloss/gloss) and any texture expectation.
  • Request a sprayed sample panel for approval before production, especially for large or high-visibility areas.
  • If you know the powder brand/series/code, provide it so we can better align the liquid coating.
