RAL codes define a target color standard, not a coating process. Different materials, gloss levels, and textures can make the same color appear different. Decide based on acceptance risk:

Use standard RAL 5015 Sky Blue when:

• The specification simply states "RAL 5015" and does not name an OEM powder brand/code.
• You are coordinating across materials where sheen/texture already differ (e.g., liquid paint to powder-coated parts).
• Repairs are low-criticality (small chips, functional protection) and close visual harmony is acceptable.
• There is no strict inspection beyond general visual agreement to the RAL standard.

Request a sample- or OEM-based match when:

• You must match an existing coated part or production lot, especially on high-visibility surfaces or large areas.
• There are strict acceptance criteria or inspector sign-off against installed equipment.
• A known OEM powder coating code exists-provide that code or a physical sample for targeting the exact appearance (including gloss/texture).
• Specific gloss/texture is required to pass acceptance.

Acceptance tip: If ordering to the standard, state on the PO "Match RAL 5015 standard" and specify the required gloss (e.g., 60 degrees gloss range). If matching an existing part, state "Match existing part" and submit a current sample; otherwise, the standard RAL may be rejected if the installed parts deviate from the standard.

Yes, provided the existing coating is sound and properly prepared.

• Clean: Remove oils/silicone with appropriate solvent cleaner; rinse/dry.
• Dull the surface: Scuff sand (320-400 grit or fine abrasive pad) to break gloss and improve adhesion; remove chalking and loose material.
• Adhesion check: Do a small test area (e.g., cross-hatch with tape pull). If marginal, use a bonding/adhesion primer.
• Prime as needed: Bare metal spots should be primed (e.g., epoxy/etch per substrate). Use a compatible system per the product TDS.
• Apply light coats: Avoid flooding solvent onto unknown or undercured powder; test first if cure state is uncertain.

Note: Differences in sheen/texture between the existing powder coat and the touch-up paint may remain visible even with correct color.

Plan for multiple light coats to achieve full hide and target film build.

• Primer color: A medium gray primer helps RAL 5015 cover uniformly. Over black or white, expect an extra coat to control undertone.
• Aerosol: Typically 3-4 light passes to reach ~1-1.5 mil DFT; a 11-12 oz can covers about 20-25 sq ft at 1 mil on smooth, non-porous surfaces (reduce coverage on textured or complex parts).
• Spray/liquid application: Target 2-3 mil DFT in 1-2 coats depending on system and reducer. Follow the specific product TDS for recoat windows.
• Variables: Substrate color/porosity, application technique, and geometry significantly affect hide and coverage-verify on a test panel before committing to production.

• Touch-up pen: Best for pinholes and chips up to ~1 mm. Fast and precise; least blending. On glossy/texture-sensitive surfaces, pen marks may remain visible.
• Brush bottle: Good for small chips/scratches (~1-10 mm). Allows filling and leveling. Brush texture can show on smooth powder-coated panels.
• Aerosol spray: Best for areas larger than coin size, edge repairs, brackets, or when blending is needed. Provides more uniform texture and gloss across a panel.

Decision guide: If the area is high-visibility or you must match an existing powder-coated appearance, favor aerosol or a full-panel respray. Specify required gloss to reduce acceptance risk. For small, low-criticality repairs, pen or brush is often sufficient.

However, keep in mind that our version of RAL5015 Sky Blue is based on the color swatch contained in the official RAL color book.
