RAL 5009 Azure Blue Paint

Use a standard RAL 5009 Azure Blue when:

• The spec only states "RAL 5009" with no OEM/powder code, texture, or gloss requirement.
• Repairs are low-criticality (small chips, non-cosmetic surfaces) and "close visual harmony" is acceptable.
• You're coordinating across different materials where sheen/texture differences already exist.

Request a custom or OEM-specific match when:

• High-visibility panels or large continuous areas must blend with existing parts.
• Acceptance will be judged against an installed part or previous production, not just the RAL standard.
• A known OEM powder code, gloss (GU), or texture is specified and must be replicated.
• There are strict inspection criteria, color holds, or multi-vendor alignment requirements.

Risk note: A RAL code defines a color target, not the coating process. Gloss, texture, film build, and application method can make two "RAL 5009" parts look different. If acceptance is tied to an existing part, provide a physical sample and specify gloss/texture and inspection lighting to avoid rejection.

• Aerosol spray: Best for panels and areas larger than roughly a few inches, or when you need to feather/blend on powder-coated parts. Apply multiple light coats; requires masking and ventilation.
• Brush bottle: Good for chips up to about 1-2 cm, edges, fasteners, and stationary equipment. Expect some brush texture; use multiple thin coats.
• Paint pen: Best for fine scratches, stone nicks, and pinpoint work (<3 mm). Not suitable for broad areas.

Tip: Select the sheen (gloss/satin/matte) to match the existing finish. If the finish is unknown or critical, confirm on a small test spot or submit a sample for a sheen-verified match before full repair.

• Identify substrate and existing coating. If bare metal is exposed, plan for a compatible primer (e.g., epoxy or zinc phosphate for steel; etch/epoxy for aluminum/galvanized).
• Clean: Remove oils, salt, and dirt with a suitable degreaser or IPA. Rinse/wipe until lint-free and residue-free.
• De-rust and feather: Mechanically remove rust to bright metal. Feather damaged edges. Fill and sand if pitting is present.
• De-gloss: Scuff glossy or powder-coated areas (e.g., 320-600 grit or non-woven pad) until uniformly dull; avoid cutting through sound coating.
• Dry and mask: Ensure the surface is dry and dust-free. Mask adjacent areas and maintain appropriate temperature/humidity per product datasheet.
• Prime exposed substrate, allow recommended flash/cure, then apply RAL 5009 in light coats. Verify adhesion and color on a small test area before proceeding.

Lighting changes the way pigments reflect, so RAL 5009 can shift in hue/strength under different sources (daylight vs. LED vs. fluorescent vs. sodium). This is normal and more noticeable on blues/blue-greens and when gloss/texture differ.

To manage acceptance risk:

• Agree on inspection lighting (e.g., 5000-6500 K, high CRI) and a consistent viewing angle/distance.
• Define the reference: compare to the RAL standard card or to an approved sample panel-do not mix criteria.
• Align sheen and texture for evaluation; glossy vs. textured finishes can make the same color look different.
• For critical work, approve a spray-out panel of RAL 5009 under the agreed lighting before production or field repair.
