RAL 5005 Signal Blue Paint

RAL 5005 identifies the color target, not the coating process. Decide based on what your acceptance will be compared to.

Use standard RAL 5005 (fan-deck target) when:

• Cross-material coordination where gloss/texture already differ (e.g., powder-coated frame with liquid-painted accessories).
• Low-criticality touch-ups or functional protection where close visual harmony is sufficient.
• No formal inspection against an existing part or OEM coating is planned.

Request a sample/OEM-specific match when:

• High-visibility surfaces or large-area repaints.
• Strict inspection or customer sign-off against existing parts.
• You must align to a specific OEM powder (e.g., Tiger, Akzo, IGP) or prior production lot.

Risk to manage: Powder vs liquid, gloss, and texture can shift the perceived hue of RAL 5005. If acceptance is against an installed component, a standard RAL may be rejected even if it meets the fan-deck target.

Add this to your PO:

• If standard: "Color target: RAL Classic 5005 Signal Blue (standard reference). Acceptance vs RAL fan standard."
• If matching: "Color target: Match supplied part [ID] in RAL 5005 family; acceptance vs returned retain. OEM powder code [if known] governs over fan standard."

Include the acceptance target and the finishing variables that affect appearance.

• Color target: "RAL Classic 5005 Signal Blue" (standard) or "Match to sample [ID]/OEM code [code]". State which governs acceptance.
• Gloss level: Target GU at 60 degrees (e.g., 30/60/85 GU). RAL does not define gloss.
• Texture: Smooth, fine texture, or orange peel tolerance (visual description or sample panel).
• Chemistry/system: e.g., epoxy, polyurethane, alkyd; single- or two-component.
• Substrate and prep: e.g., CRS, aluminum, galvanized; primer spec if applicable.
• Application method: Spray/aerosol/brush; intended film build range.
• Acceptance method: Visual under D65 at agreed distance/angle, and/or instrumental Delta E tolerance vs the chosen standard and geometry (specify instrument/geometry if used).
• Retains and traceability: Request a retained panel and record lot numbers for color repeatability.

Example: "Color: RAL 5005 Signal Blue - standard fan reference. Gloss: 60 GU ±5. Texture: smooth. System: 2K polyurethane over epoxy primer. Substrate: aluminum. Application: spray. Acceptance: visual vs RAL fan under D65; Delta E00 <= 1.5 vs supplier retain."

Texture and gloss change how RAL 5005 is perceived. Powder coats often have orange peel or fine texture; liquid touch-up is typically smoother. Smoother, glossier films can make the color appear darker/richer, while textured or lower-gloss films can appear lighter or grayer, even when the pigment match is correct.

Operational guidance:

• For small chips, use the closest practical gloss and apply minimally; expect some visual blend rather than invisibility.
• For larger repairs or adjacent panels, specify the target gloss (GU) and request a sample-based match to the actual part to account for your finish.
• If inspection is strict, submit a field sample and accept against a retained panel matched to your part, not just the RAL fan standard.

Confusion often occurs with nearby RAL blues (e.g., 5002, 5007, 5010). Prevent errors with a simple check process.

• Verify the four-digit code and name on the drawing: RAL 5005 Signal Blue.
• Cross-check against a current RAL Classic fan deck or a certified digital reference. Do not rely on screens alone.
• If the requirement is to match an existing part, state "match to part" on the PO and send a sample; do not assume it is the fan-deck 5005.
• Request written confirmation from stakeholders that RAL 5005 is the intended target (not RAL 5010 Gentian Blue or RAL 5002 Ultramarine).
• For legacy specs, ask for any associated OEM powder code; that code should govern acceptance if provided.

While we can provide RAL5005 Signal Blue in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another brand.
