• A specific OEM/powder code (brand/series/gloss/texture) is known-provide that exact code.
• The existing finish has a defined gloss/texture that is unknown or cannot be specified.

A standard RAL 5004 order is typically sufficient if:

• It's for cross-material coordination where textures/sheens already differ.
• You're doing low-criticality repairs (chips, corrosion protection).
• Close visual harmony is acceptable and exact appearance match is not required.

For custom matching, include: a representative part or chip (clean, flat, >=50 mm square), the required sheen (e.g., gloss target/range at 60 degrees) and any texture notes, plus known process info (powder vs liquid, substrate).

On very dark colors like RAL 5004 Black Blue, small sheen differences are highly visible and are a common reason for touch-up rejection. The RAL code does not define gloss level, so ordering the correct color but the wrong sheen can fail visual inspection.

To control risk:

• Define the target sheen upfront (matte/satin/gloss or a gloss unit range at 60 degrees).
• Order product in that sheen or request a match to the sheen of your existing part.
• Verify on a test panel under your inspection lighting before committing to production.
• For touch-ups, feather into a break line and avoid hard edges to reduce sheen contrast.

Document acceptance: state whether inspection is against the RAL standard color in a specified sheen, or against an existing part's appearance. Without this, a correct color may still be rejected for gloss mismatch.

Not exactly. Powder coats often have orange peel or a fine texture, while liquid paints and aerosols typically dry smooth. Even with correct RAL 5004 color and matching sheen, a texture difference can make the repair look lighter/darker or glossier.

Decision guidance:

• Small chips/edges: liquid touch-up is usually acceptable-match sheen, apply light coats, and feather the repair.
• Larger areas or visible panels: use the same coating process (powder to powder) or request a custom match based on a part so the appearance (color + sheen + texture) is aligned.
• Always test on a spare part or inconspicuous area before full application.

Plan for process differences; do not assume a smooth liquid touch-up will visually match a textured powder finish in all conditions.
