RAL5004 Black Blue is a near-black blue engineered for minimal reflectance and understated presence in technical or industrial environments. This shade belongs to the RAL Classic system and features an exceptionally dark appearance (L 14.22, LRV 1.77), resulting in minimal light reflectance. The subtle blue character (b -5.68, hue angle 270.3) creates a cool blue-black undertone, while low chroma (5.68) presents as nearly neutral with subdued intensity. In most conditions, RAL5004 reads as black, with the blue undertone only becoming evident under direct lighting or in gloss finishes, and matte versions appearing almost pure black.

This color is commonly specified for industrial or technical equipment to reduce glare and maintain a non-intrusive look, as well as for powder coating and touchup on mechanical parts, architectural steel, site furnishings, and low-visibility exterior elements requiring a cool black. RAL5004 Black Blue is selected when true black is deemed too stark and a technically defined blue-based dark is called for. Finish type and lighting are important considerations: the subtle blue cast can be obscured in matte, and matching across sheens or substrates may require physical approval samples if precise visual alignment is needed.

Insights
- L (14.2) and LRV (1.77) confirm that this is a nearly-black shade, reflecting very little light under most conditions.
- The negative b value (-5.7) and hue angle (270.3) produce a subtle blue undertone, most evident in gloss or strong lighting.
- The RGB split (32, 36, 44) maintains a balance just toward blue, avoiding obvious coloration in typical use.

Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About RAL 5004 Black Blur Paint

When should I send a sample instead of ordering a standard RAL 5004 Black Blue?

Send a physical sample or provide an OEM/powder reference when acceptance depends on matching an existing finish, not just the RAL standard color. RAL 5004 defines a color target; sheen and texture are not defined and can drive rejections.

Send a sample or OEM code if:

  • You must match an existing coated part or assembly for inspection/acceptance.
  • The area is high-visibility, large, or multi-panel where small differences will read.
  • A specific OEM/powder code (brand/series/gloss/texture) is known-provide that exact code.
  • The existing finish has a defined gloss/texture that is unknown or cannot be specified.

A standard RAL 5004 order is typically sufficient if:

  • It's for cross-material coordination where textures/sheens already differ.
  • You're doing low-criticality repairs (chips, corrosion protection).
  • Close visual harmony is acceptable and exact appearance match is not required.

For custom matching, include: a representative part or chip (clean, flat, >=50 mm square), the required sheen (e.g., gloss target/range at 60 degrees) and any texture notes, plus known process info (powder vs liquid, substrate).

How does sheen affect acceptance when repairing or repainting RAL 5004 Black Blue?

On very dark colors like RAL 5004 Black Blue, small sheen differences are highly visible and are a common reason for touch-up rejection. The RAL code does not define gloss level, so ordering the correct color but the wrong sheen can fail visual inspection.

To control risk:

  • Define the target sheen upfront (matte/satin/gloss or a gloss unit range at 60 degrees).
  • Order product in that sheen or request a match to the sheen of your existing part.
  • Verify on a test panel under your inspection lighting before committing to production.
  • For touch-ups, feather into a break line and avoid hard edges to reduce sheen contrast.

Document acceptance: state whether inspection is against the RAL standard color in a specified sheen, or against an existing part's appearance. Without this, a correct color may still be rejected for gloss mismatch.

Will a liquid touch-up of RAL 5004 Black Blue look the same as a RAL 5004 powder-coated part?

Not exactly. Powder coats often have orange peel or a fine texture, while liquid paints and aerosols typically dry smooth. Even with correct RAL 5004 color and matching sheen, a texture difference can make the repair look lighter/darker or glossier.

Decision guidance:

  • Small chips/edges: liquid touch-up is usually acceptable-match sheen, apply light coats, and feather the repair.
  • Larger areas or visible panels: use the same coating process (powder to powder) or request a custom match based on a part so the appearance (color + sheen + texture) is aligned.
  • Always test on a spare part or inconspicuous area before full application.

Plan for process differences; do not assume a smooth liquid touch-up will visually match a textured powder finish in all conditions.
