RAL 2002 Vermillion Paint

RAL 2002 Vermillion is a standardized color target (RAL Classic). It does not define gloss, texture, resin system, or application method. Decide based on visibility, inspection risk, and whether you are matching the standard or an existing part.

• Use standard RAL 2002 Vermillion when:
  • Cross-material coordination is acceptable (e.g., liquid touch-up over a powder-coated part) and some sheen/texture difference is expected.
  • Low-criticality repairs (chips, edge touch-ups) or functional protection.
  • Parts are not viewed side-by-side or under critical inspection lighting.
  • Acceptance will be visual against the RAL reference rather than against an existing part.
• Request a match to your part/OEM when:
  • High-visibility cosmetic surfaces or large, continuous areas.
  • Strict acceptance/inspection requirements or customer audits.
  • You have a known OEM powder code (brand/series, gloss, texture) that production must align to.
  • Existing parts have aged/faded and the goal is to match them, not the RAL standard.
• Risk controls (either path):
  • Specify target gloss (e.g., GU at 60 degrees) and surface texture in the PO.
  • State acceptance reference: "Match RAL 2002 (RAL Classic) under neutral lighting" or "Match to provided part/sample."
  • When in doubt, approve a sample panel before production.

Primer needs are driven by substrate and service environment, not the RAL color. However, primer choice and shade can influence hide and perceived color until full opacity is reached.

• Bare carbon steel: Use a corrosion-resistant primer (e.g., epoxy or a compatible DTM system if allowed by your product datasheet). For repairs, remove rust to sound metal, feather edges, and spot-prime.
• Galvanized steel: Clean thoroughly, lightly abrade/sweep if possible, and use a galvanized/wash primer before topcoat.
• Aluminum or stainless: Degrease, abrade, and use an adhesion-promoting or epoxy primer.
• Plastics/FRP: Use a plastic adhesion promoter or compatible primer; test for softening or poor adhesion before proceeding.
• Previously painted surfaces: If sound, clean and degloss; a bonding/epoxy primer improves reliability, especially over unknown chemistries.
• Primer shade: For RAL 2002 (a strong redorange), a medium gray or oxide-tinted primer often improves hiding and consistency. Avoid very dark primers if coverage is a concern.

Always follow the coating product datasheet for compatibility, film build, and recoat windows.

• Preparation: Remove contaminants, degloss by scuffing to a uniform dull finish, and clean again. Address any chalking or weak areas before coating.
• Adhesion check: For unknown chemistries or powder coat, do a small test area, allow full cure, and perform an adhesion check before committing to production.
• Priming: A bonding/adhesion-promoting or epoxy primer improves reliability over cured powder or unknown legacy coatings.
• When to strip: If there is poor adhesion, uncured/soft coating, heavy chalking, or a texture/orange peel you cannot accept telegraphing through, stripping to a stable substrate is recommended.
• Acceptance risks: Overcoating does not eliminate underlying texture and can change perceived gloss. For high-visibility work, specify target gloss/texture and confirm with a test panel under your inspection lighting before full rollout.
