A match of Sherwin Williams SW4011 Mortar is the color target, but the finished coating can still read differently depending on the light, the sheen you choose, the texture of the part, and the colors or finishes around it. A match of SW4011 Mortar may look a little warmer, cooler, flatter, or brighter once it is on a real surface.

If the painted item will sit right next to an existing coating, check the result on the actual part or on a similar test piece before you commit to the full project. That is especially important when you need the new coating to sit beside older paint, trim, hardware, or fixtures with a different age or texture.

Choose the finish based on how you need SW4011 Mortar to perform, not just on the color name. Higher gloss finishes reflect more light, clean more easily, and can make the same color read a little different on the finished item. Lower gloss finishes reduce reflection and usually make surface texture and application marks less noticeable.

If you are matching an existing painted part, try to stay as close as possible to the sheen of the surface you are trying to coordinate. If the item will be handled often or needs easier wipe-downs, a more durable or glossier finish may be the better practical choice if that option is available for the format you are ordering.

Before applying a match of SW4011 Mortar to metal or an already painted surface, clean the part thoroughly, remove grease and contamination, and scuff any glossy coating so the new paint has a better surface to grip. If there is rust, loose paint, or failing old coating, those problems should be addressed first.

The condition of the old coating, including its gloss and texture, can affect how SW4011 Mortar looks after application. If you are coating a fixture, bracket, rail, panel, or other metal part that will stay in service, prepare the surface carefully and test a small area when the existing finish is in questionable condition.
