A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 30051 is a deep, low-chroma brown with a warm, slightly earthy undertone. It reads dark rather than black, with a subdued character that keeps it from looking bright or saturated.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint made to match Fed Std 595C 30051 is a practical option for maintenance, fabrication, restoration, and prototyping work where a government color reference is the target. It can be used on brackets, enclosures, panels, cabinets, housings, switch covers, rails, and other sprayable parts that need a consistent brown finish across metal, plastic, or composite surfaces.
Because the color is dark and muted, finish, surface texture, and film build can change how it reads after spraying. Sheen differences and substrate contrast may make the color appear lighter, deeper, or slightly warmer than expected, and a darker or very different base color can affect coverage. The code identifies the color reference only; it does not define coating chemistry, gloss, or project approval requirements.
For touch-up beside an older in-service coating, the standard reference may not match the weathered part exactly even when the code is correct. If the existing finish has faded, changed sheen, or been exposed for a long time, comparing against the actual part or a project sample can give a better result than relying on the code alone.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 30051 *
What does Fed Std 595C 30051 actually define, and what does it not define?
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 30051 is a government color reference target. It tells you which color to match, but it does not by itself define the coating chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion system, or any formal approval status.
If your project needs a specific product type or compliance outcome, choose those requirements separately from the color code. MyPerfectColor supplies custom-matched paint made to match US Government Fed Std 595C 30051, not an official government-issued coating system.
Will Fed Std 595C 30051 match an older painted part exactly, or only the standard color target?
Fed Std 595C 30051 matches the standard color reference, not necessarily an aged in-service finish. Weathering, fade, sheen loss, texture, and previous repaint history can make an old coating look different even when the code is correct.
For touch-up next to an existing part, the standard match may be close enough, but a full-part repaint or a match to the existing surface can sometimes be the better choice when appearance consistency is critical.
When is Fed Std 595C 30051 a practical choice for parts, panels, or prototypes?
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 30051 is a practical choice when a drawing, maintenance manual, procurement package, or prototype requirement calls for a specific government color reference. It is commonly used for parts, panels, brackets, enclosures, housings, fixtures, training aids, and mock-ups.
If the goal is to stay aligned with the specified government color standard across multiple parts or materials, a match of US Government Fed Std 595C 30051 is usually the right starting point. If the project has a stricter acceptance process, confirm whether a sample panel or project-specific approval is also required.
How should I reorder Fed Std 595C 30051 to keep multiple parts consistent?
For repeat orders, reorder by the exact code, product format, and finish. A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 30051 can be matched in different paint formats, and the final appearance can shift if the product type or sheen changes between orders.
To improve consistency, keep records of the code, chosen finish, substrate, and application method. Even with the same color reference, different surfaces and application techniques can change how the paint appears after it dries.
Can the finish make Fed Std 595C 30051 look different after application?
Yes. Gloss, satin, matte, texture, and film build can all change how Fed Std 595C 30051 looks once applied. The same color reference can read lighter, darker, or slightly different depending on the finish and how the coating is applied.
If the visual result matters, choose the finish intentionally instead of relying on the code alone. The color standard defines the target color, but the coating's sheen and application details affect the final appearance.
