A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 26555 is a light-to-medium warm neutral with a beige-tan body and a slight yellow cast. It reads subdued rather than bright, with low chroma and enough depth to hold shape without looking dark.
MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to this Fed Standard reference can be used on equipment panels, brackets, enclosures, housings, switch covers, support hardware, fabricated frames, and color-coded accessories. It is a practical match for maintenance touch-up, prototype parts, mock-ups, and smaller components where a consistent government-standard color reference is needed across metal, plastic, or previously coated surfaces. MyPerfectColor supplies its own paint matched to the selected reference, not an official government coating system.
Because this is a lighter neutral, coverage can be affected by the starting color and surface condition beneath it. Dark substrates, repairs with visible edges, and rough or uneven finishes may need additional build for even hide, and gloss level can shift how warm or muted the color appears. For specification-sensitive work, the standard code should be matched to the current project target rather than to an aged nearby coating that may have faded or changed sheen.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 26555 is a government color reference target. It tells you which color to match, but it does not by itself choose the paint chemistry, gloss, primer, surface prep, corrosion system, or any formal approval status. If you need a color match for specification-driven work, order MyPerfectColor paint matched to US Government Fed Std 595C 26555 and then confirm the rest of the coating requirements for your project separately.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 26555 is the correct target if the project calls for that standard, but an older in-service coating can look different because of fade, weathering, sheen change, texture, and prior coating differences. For a touch-up beside an aged finish, the standard match may still be visibly different. If the repair is highly visible or acceptance-critical, a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part may be the safer choice.
For the best repeatability, reorder by the exact code, US Government Fed Std 595C 26555, and keep the same product type and finish. That helps reduce variation between batches. Even so, substrate, primer, film build, and application method can still change the final look, so use the same prep and application process when consistency matters.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 26555 is commonly used for specification-driven work such as equipment parts, panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, carts, fixtures, prototypes, mock-ups, and color-coded hardware. It is a practical reference when a drawing, manual, procurement package, or maintenance task calls for a government color standard rather than a decorative color choice.
Start with cleaning and degreasing, then scuff the surface so the coating can bond properly. On metal, also check for rust or corrosion before painting. On an existing coating, test the finish and make sure the old surface is sound before applying the new paint. Primer choice should be based on the substrate and the condition of the part, not on the color code alone.
