A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 20450 is a muted warm beige-tan with a soft yellow-brown undertone. It reads as a light-to-medium color with moderate chroma, so it looks subdued rather than clean, bright, or strongly saturated.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint made to match the selected Fed Standard 595C reference can be used on equipment panels, fabricated brackets, enclosures, cabinet faces, support hardware, vent grilles, switch covers, and other sprayable parts that need a consistent government-standard color across metal, plastic, or previously coated surfaces.
Because this is a relatively light, low-to-moderate chroma color, the finish and the substrate can affect how evenly it reads after spraying. Darker bases, rough texture, body filler, or uneven film build may show through more than expected, and a different sheen can make the color appear slightly warmer or cooler than the reference chip. For work where the surrounding coating is aged or sun-exposed, a standard-reference match may not look the same as the existing part.
The Fed Std 595C code identifies the color target, not a coating system or approval status. For inspection-sensitive or acceptance-sensitive repairs, compare the match to the actual part or project specification if the existing finish has changed with wear, weathering, or gloss loss.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 20450 is a color reference target, not a complete coating specification. It tells you the color to match, but it does not decide the paint chemistry, gloss level, primer, surface preparation, application method, or whether the coating system is formally approved for your project.
If your drawing, manual, or procurement package calls out Fed Std 595C 20450, order a product matched to that standard and then verify the rest of the coating requirements separately.
Not always. Even if the paint is matched to Fed Std 595C 20450, the repaired area can still look different next to an older coating because of fade, weathering, sheen change, texture, and film build differences.
For touch-up work, the safest approach is to compare against the actual part or a sample panel when appearance is critical. If the surrounding finish is aged or inconsistent, a full-part repaint may give a more uniform result than spot repair.
No. Fed Std 595C 20450 only defines the color target. It does not tell you whether the coating is suitable for interior use, exterior exposure, abrasion, chemical contact, or a specific substrate.
Choose the product format and coating system based on the service environment first, then make sure the color is matched to Fed Std 595C 20450. That helps avoid ordering a paint that matches the color but does not meet the job's durability needs.
Yes. The same Fed Std 595C 20450 color can look different depending on gloss, satin, matte, texture, and film thickness. A color match is only part of the final appearance.
If the project has to visually match an existing part, confirm the finish condition as well as the color reference. A correct color in the wrong sheen can still appear off once it is applied.
Clean and degrease the surface first, then remove loose contamination and scuff the area if the substrate or old coating needs better adhesion. On bare metal, corrosion control and primer selection may be necessary before applying a match of Fed Std 595C 20450.
If you are coating over an existing finish or mixed substrates, test the paint on the actual surface before committing to the full job. That helps confirm adhesion, appearance, and compatibility before larger application.
