This is a deep blue with a cool, teal-leaning undertone. It reads dark and fairly restrained rather than bright, with enough color to separate from black but still a strong low-lightness appearance.
MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to the selected Sherwin-Williams color reference is a practical choice for railings, gate hardware, shutters, mailboxes, speaker grilles, vent covers, switch plates, brackets, shelf supports, and other small parts that benefit from a repeatable dark blue finish. It can also work on PVC trim pieces, fixtures, and removable accessories where a spray application is easier than brushing.
Because the color is dark, coverage and film build matter: thin coats can leave lighter areas visible on white or uneven substrates, and the final result may shift a bit deeper or more teal depending on gloss, texture, and surface prep. Dark cool colors can also show sanding marks, dents, and sheen differences more readily, so a smooth base and even application help the color read consistently.

Primer depends on the substrate, surface condition, and the product you are using. If you are painting raw, glossy, patched, stained, or otherwise hard-to-bond surfaces, primer can improve adhesion and help the finish look more even. If the MyPerfectColor product you selected has specific prep guidance for your surface, follow that guidance first. In general, primer usually does not hurt, but it is not always required.
The SDS is tied to the specific MyPerfectColor product you order, not to Sherwin Williams 42117 by color code alone. Check the MyPerfectColor Safety Data Sheets page for the product line you are buying, and review the sheet that matches the exact paint chemistry or format you selected.
If you need the SDS for a specific order, use the SDS for the MyPerfectColor paint you purchased rather than relying on the brand color reference alone.
Not always. Lighting, sheen, placement, and nearby surfaces can all change how Sherwin Williams 42117 reads after it is applied. The same matched color can look different on metal, plastic, wood, or a previously coated part, especially when it is next to an older painted surface.
If the item is important or will sit beside an existing finish, test the MyPerfectColor match on the same substrate and in the same lighting before committing to the full project.
Custom-made color matches should be chosen carefully because they are not returnable or refundable. Before ordering MyPerfectColor matched to Sherwin Williams 42117, confirm the exact color reference, product type, sheen, and quantity.
If the painted item will be compared directly against an existing surface, it is worth double-checking the reference and application details before you place the order.
A match of Sherwin Williams 42117 is only the color reference, so the sheen is a separate ordering decision. Choose the finish based on the surface, the amount of wear it will see, how easy you want cleanup to be, and how reflective you want the final coating to be. Lower sheen usually hides minor surface flaws better, while higher sheen is more reflective and can make the same match read differently.
If you are coating vents, covers, hardware, pipes, or other small parts, pick the sheen that fits the part's use and the appearance of the surrounding surface.
MyPerfectColor has an original sample of the Sherwin Williams 42117 in its color archive. This enables us to make paint and verify that it matches the original.
