A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 35177 is a muted, medium-dark blue-gray with a cool cast and a slight green-blue undertone. The low chroma keeps it subdued rather than bright, and the LRV of 18.18 places it on the darker side without reading as black.

MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to this reference is often used on panels, enclosures, housings, brackets, carts, rails, switch covers, and fabricated parts that need to follow a government color standard. It also works for maintenance touch-up on accessories and support hardware, including mock-ups, training aids, and color-coded components where a repeatable visual target matters.

Because this is a darker, low-chroma color, surface condition and finish can affect how it reads after application. Gloss level, texture, and substrate contrast may make it appear deeper, flatter, or slightly bluer once sprayed. The code defines the color target, but not the coating system, sheen, or approval status, and touch-up beside older coatings can show aging or gloss differences even when the match is correct.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.

We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]

The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.

The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
    1 = gloss
    2 = semi gloss
    3 = matt

The second digit indicates the color group;
      0 = Brown     5 = Blue
      1 = Red         6 = Grey
      2 = Orange   7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
      3 = Yellow     8 = Fluorescent
      4 = Green

The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.

While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ AMS-STD-595 35177 *

What does AMS-STD-595 35177 define for MyPerfectColor paint, and what does it not define?

AMS-STD-595 35177 defines the color reference target only. It tells you which government color standard to match, but it does not determine the coating chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion protection, or any formal approval status.

If your project needs a specific coating system or an acceptance requirement, confirm those requirements separately before ordering a match of AMS-STD-595 35177.

Can I use MyPerfectColor matched to AMS-STD-595 35177 for touch-up on an older painted part?

You can use a match of AMS-STD-595 35177 for touch-up, but the best choice depends on the condition of the existing coating. If the old finish has faded, weathered, changed sheen, or been repainted before, a standard color match may not blend perfectly beside the in-service surface.

For visible repairs, a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part or sample may be the safer decision when appearance consistency matters.

Why can AMS-STD-595 35177 look different after I apply it in a different finish?

The color code by itself does not control the final appearance. Gloss, satin, matte, texture, and film build can all change how AMS-STD-595 35177 reads after application.

If your project calls for a specific finish, choose the product and finish level that match the job requirements, not just the color code. A color match in the wrong sheen can still look wrong on the finished part.

What kinds of projects commonly use AMS-STD-595 35177?

A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 35177 is commonly used on specification-driven projects such as equipment parts, panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, fixtures, mock-ups, training aids, and color-coded hardware.

It is a practical reference for government, military, fabrication, restoration, and prototyping work where the goal is to match a stated standard rather than guess at the color visually.

How do I choose the right product format for AMS-STD-595 35177 based on the service environment?

The color standard does not choose the coating performance for you. For AMS-STD-595 35177, the right product depends on whether the part is used indoors or outdoors, how much abrasion it will see, whether it will be exposed to chemicals, and what substrate you are coating.

MyPerfectColor offers custom-matched paint in formats such as spray paint and touch-up paint, but you should select the format and coating type that fit the environment and the surface you are painting.
