A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 30040 reads as a deep, muted brown with a low-chroma, slightly warm undertone. It sits closer to a brown-gray than a clear red or orange brown, and its low LRV means it will appear quite dark once applied.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint is made to match the selected Fed Standard 595C or AMS-STD-595 color reference. It is not an official government-issued coating system, and the color code by itself does not determine gloss, chemistry, corrosion protection, or acceptance status.
For spray-paint use, this color is well suited to brackets, equipment panels, enclosures, housings, control boxes, rail components, vent covers, switch plates, tool carts, fabricated supports, and other small parts that need to track a government color standard. It can also be used on restored hardware, training aids, mock-ups, and prototype parts where a consistent dark brown reference is required across metal, plastic, or composite surfaces.
Because the color is dark and muted, surface prep, film build, and sheen can still change how it reads after spraying. Gloss or semi-gloss finishes may make edges, texture, and substrate variation more visible, and a fresh match may not read exactly the same as an aged or weathered coating beside it. For project-critical work, a sample panel or comparison to the existing part can be useful when the surrounding finish has changed over time.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 30040 is a color reference target. It tells you which color to match, but it does not by itself define the paint chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion system, or approval status.
If your project is compliance-critical, use the drawing, specification, or approval process to confirm the coating requirements before ordering MyPerfectColor paint matched to AMS-STD-595 30040.
It can still stand out. Even when the color code is correct, weathering, fade, sheen, texture, and the prior coating can make the repaired area look different from the surrounding finish.
If you are matching beside an aged in-service coating, a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part may be a better choice than matching AMS-STD-595 30040 alone.
MyPerfectColor can supply a custom-matched paint made to match AMS-STD-595 30040 in product formats such as spray paint, touch-up paint, paint pens, and other options depending on the listing shown on the site.
The color code is the reference target. Choose the format that fits the part size, access, and application method for your project.
Dry-to-touch, recoat timing, and full cure are different stages, and the correct timing depends on the specific MyPerfectColor product format you order for AMS-STD-595 30040.
Use the product instructions on the container or product page to plan handling and recoating. If the project is sensitive to finish quality, test on a sample piece first.
