Step 1: Select Paint Type / Application

A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 20090 is a dark, muted brown with a slightly warm cast and low chroma. It reads earthy rather than vivid, with a subdued character that can look deeper or flatter depending on sheen and substrate.

For government-standard work, MyPerfectColor supplies a custom-matched paint to the selected AMS-STD-595 reference, not an official government-issued coating system. The code gives a color target, but it does not define gloss, chemistry, or how an aged in-service part will read after weathering or use. If you are matching an existing part, the surrounding finish condition can matter as much as the code itself.

MyPerfectColor custom spray paint in this color can be used on brackets, control panels, equipment housings, cabinet doors, switch covers, pipe supports, rails, fabricated steel parts, carts, and maintenance fixtures where a specified brown reference is needed. It also fits restoration, prototyping, training aids, and color-coded hardware when multiple components need to stay aligned to the same government color standard.

Because this is a dark, low-LRV color, surface texture, film build, and sheen variation can be noticeable, especially on smooth metal or molded plastic. Uneven prep or thin coverage may change the final read, and adjacent touch-up work can show differences in aging or gloss even when the code match is correct. When the finish is acceptance-sensitive, a sample panel or comparison to the existing part may help confirm the result.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.

We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]

The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.

The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
    1 = gloss
    2 = semi gloss
    3 = matt

The second digit indicates the color group;
      0 = Brown     5 = Blue
      1 = Red         6 = Grey
      2 = Orange   7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
      3 = Yellow     8 = Fluorescent
      4 = Green

The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.

While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ AMS-STD-595 20090 *

What does AMS-STD-595 20090 specify, and what does it not specify?

AMS-STD-595 20090 specifies a government color reference target. It helps identify the color to match, but it does not by itself define paint chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion system, or formal approval status for your project.

MyPerfectColor supplies custom-matched paint made to match the selected reference, but the coating system still has to be chosen based on the job requirements.

Will a match to AMS-STD-595 20090 blend with an older in-service coating?

Not always. A correct match to AMS-STD-595 20090 can still look different beside an older coating because weathering, fade, sheen, texture, and prior repaint work all affect the finished appearance.

If the repair must blend into an existing part, compare against the actual surface or a sample panel. For new parts or a full-part repaint, matching the standard reference is usually the better starting point.

How does finish affect the look of AMS-STD-595 20090 after application?

Finish can change how AMS-STD-595 20090 looks after it is applied. Gloss, matte, satin, texture, and film build all affect how light reflects from the surface, so the same color reference can appear different in different coating systems.

The color code alone does not define the final appearance. If the finish matters to the project, choose the correct coating system and confirm the sheen and application method before you order.

How should I prepare metal or existing coatings before applying AMS-STD-595 20090?

Clean and degrease the surface first, then remove corrosion and scuff any sound existing coating so the new material can bond properly. If the project calls for primer, use one that fits the substrate and the coating system you plan to apply.

Mixed substrates and older coatings can change both adhesion and appearance, so testing AMS-STD-595 20090 on the actual part or on a sample panel is a practical way to reduce risk before doing the full job.

What kinds of projects commonly use AMS-STD-595 20090?

A match to AMS-STD-595 20090 is commonly used for equipment panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, carts, fixtures, color-coded hardware, prototypes, mock-ups, and maintenance touch-up work.

It is a good fit when the job is specification-driven and needs a repeatable government color reference. MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint is available for this kind of project in formats suited to the part and application method.
