A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 17038 reads as an extremely dark, nearly black neutral with a slight cool blue-gray cast. It has very low chroma, so the color stays subdued rather than looking vivid or colorful, and the low LRV means it can appear close to black on finished parts.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in this color is useful for specification-driven work on panels, enclosures, housings, brackets, rails, support hardware, switch covers, and fabricated components. It can also be used for touch-up on equipment, carts, fixtures, grilles, and other parts that need to stay visually consistent with a government color reference.
Because this is such a dark color, substrate condition and finish have a noticeable effect on the result. Surface texture, film build, and sheen can change how deep or blue the color reads, and repairs next to older paint may show differences even when the code match is correct. Very dark colors can also make scratches, waviness, and uneven coverage more apparent, so consistent preparation and application help.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 17038 is a government color reference target. It tells you which color to order, but it does not by itself define the coating chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion protection system, or any formal approval process.
For projects that specify this code, MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to AMS-STD-595 17038. If your job also requires a specific coating system or acceptance standard, confirm those requirements separately before ordering.
Not always. If you are repairing or touching up an existing part, weathering, fade, sheen changes, texture, and differences in the original coating can make AMS-STD-595 17038 look different beside the old finish even when the color code is correct.
For acceptance-critical or highly visible repairs, a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part may be a better choice than matching the standard code alone. If the surrounding coating is aged or unknown, treat the standard match as a reference target rather than a guaranteed visual match to the in-service surface.
Reorder by the exact code, AMS-STD-595 17038, and keep the product type and finish the same across all parts. That gives you the best chance of consistent results from one order to the next.
Even with the same color reference, substrate, primer, film build, and application method can change the final appearance. For multi-part projects, use the same format and process on every piece whenever possible.
Before ordering, confirm the exact color code, AMS-STD-595 17038, plus the product type, finish, and quantity you need. That is especially important for custom-made color matches because the order is mixed or produced to your selected reference.
Custom color orders are not returnable or refundable, so review the details carefully before you buy. If you are matching a specification-driven project, make sure the reference code and the required format are both correct.
MyPerfectColor can provide a custom match to AMS-STD-595 17038 in spray paint and other formats where available for the selected color. Depending on the project, that may include touch-up paint or other application-friendly options.
The color code is the reference target, not a product line. Choose the format that fits the part, the application method, and the repair size so the order matches both the color standard and the way the coating will be used.
