A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 16440 reads as a muted light-to-medium gray-beige with a soft warm undertone and a very low-chroma, restrained appearance. It is not a bright or clean neutral; the color leans slightly warm and earthy, with enough softness that it typically looks subdued rather than crisp.

MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in this reference is suited to specification-driven work on panels, brackets, enclosures, cabinets, housings, vent covers, carts, and fabricated hardware. It can also be used for smaller parts such as switch plates, grilles, supports, and training or mock-up components when the goal is to keep replacement pieces visually aligned with a government color standard.

Because the color is relatively light and muted, substrate color and finish can still affect the result. Darker base materials may need better priming or additional coverage to reduce show-through, and gloss or semi-gloss finishes can make surface texture, weld marks, and edge repair differences more noticeable. If you are matching against an older in-service coating, the standard reference may not read exactly the same as a weathered or faded part.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.

We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]

The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.

The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
    1 = gloss
    2 = semi gloss
    3 = matt

The second digit indicates the color group;
      0 = Brown     5 = Blue
      1 = Red         6 = Grey
      2 = Orange   7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
      3 = Yellow     8 = Fluorescent
      4 = Green

The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.

While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ AMS-STD-595 16440 *

What does AMS-STD-595 16440 define, and what does it not define for my project?

A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 16440 is the color reference target only. It tells you which government-standard color to order, but it does not by itself define the paint chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion protection system, or any formal approval status.

For MyPerfectColor, this means you are selecting a paint matched to AMS-STD-595 16440, not an official government-issued coating system. If your job has specification, approval, or compliance requirements, confirm those separately before ordering.

Will AMS-STD-595 16440 match an older painted part exactly when I am doing touch-up work?

Not always. Even if AMS-STD-595 16440 is the correct code, an older in-service coating can look different because of weathering, fading, sheen change, texture, film build, or differences in the original coating system.

If you are repairing beside an aged finish, the standard reference may be close enough for the project, but a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part can sometimes be the better choice. For acceptance-critical work, consider a sample panel or project-specific approval before you commit to the repair.

How should I plan dry time and recoat timing for AMS-STD-595 16440 paint?

Dry-to-touch, recoat time, and full cure are different steps, and the right timing depends on the specific MyPerfectColor product format you choose for AMS-STD-595 16440. Do not plan the job from the color code alone.

Use the product instructions and data for the selected spray paint, touch-up paint, or other format to set your handling and recoat schedule. If the part will be assembled, masked, packaged, or put back into service quickly, make sure the chosen product can meet that timeline.

Does the AMS-STD-595 16440 code include an SDS or product data for my order?

No. A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 16440 is the color reference, not the product document set. The SDS, technical data, and application instructions belong to the specific MyPerfectColor paint product or chemistry you order.

If you need documentation for procurement, maintenance records, or job files, make sure you save the SDS and product data for the exact item purchased. The color code alone does not provide those documents or define the coating system.

How do I reorder AMS-STD-595 16440 to keep repeat parts consistent?

Reorder by the exact code, AMS-STD-595 16440, and keep the same product format and finish whenever possible. That is the best way to improve consistency across repeat parts or multi-part projects.

Even with the same code, substrate, primer, application method, and film build can change the final appearance. If you are matching an existing part, save the original order details so you can repeat the same product selection later.
