A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 38903 reads as a vivid warm orange-red with strong saturation and a slight earthy cast. It is more orange-leaning than a true red, with enough depth to hold color on small parts while still reading bright and direct.
MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to the selected Fed Standard 595C reference can be used on marked panels, switch plates, brackets, enclosures, housings, hardware, carts, and other specification-driven parts. It also fits equipment mock-ups, training aids, restoration touch-ups, and color-coded accessories when the goal is to match the standard reference rather than an aged or faded finish.
Because this is a vivid color, coverage can be more sensitive to substrate color, texture, and film build. Darker or uneven bases may need extra coats for uniform appearance, and gloss or semi-gloss finishes can make seams, sanding marks, and surface variation more noticeable. If you are matching an existing part that has weathered or changed sheen, the standard reference and the in-service coating may not read the same.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 38903 is a government color reference target. It tells MyPerfectColor which color to match, but it does not by itself define the coating chemistry, gloss, surface prep, corrosion system, or any formal approval status.
When you order this color, you are buying MyPerfectColor paint matched to the selected Fed Standard 595C reference, not an official government-issued coating system.
Not always. A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 38903 is the correct reference color target, but an older in-service part may have faded, weathered, changed sheen, or built up texture over time.
If you are touching up next to an aged coating, the standard match can still look different from the surrounding finish. In those cases, a sample panel or a match to the existing part may be the better choice than matching the code alone.
Please confirm the exact Fed Std 595C 38903 code, product type, finish, and quantity before ordering. Custom-matched color orders are made to your selection and are not returnable or refundable.
If the project needs a specific format, make sure you choose that before checkout so the paint you receive fits the job.
Dry-to-touch, recoat timing, and full cure are different milestones. The right schedule depends on the product format you order for Fed Std 595C 38903, such as spray paint or touch-up paint, as well as temperature, humidity, film build, and substrate.
Use the product instructions for the specific item you buy, and do not assume that a color code alone tells you when the coating is ready for the next coat or for handling.
For repeat work, reorder by the exact Fed Std 595C 38903 code, the same product type, and the same finish so you stay as consistent as possible across parts.
Keep in mind that substrate, surface prep, and application method can still change how the final color reads. If the parts must match each other closely, use the same process on all of them.
