A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36440 reads as a mid-light, low-chroma neutral with a soft warm undertone. It sits closer to gray-beige than to a clean gray, with a restrained olive-yellow cast and a quiet, utilitarian appearance.

MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to this government color reference is useful for maintenance and fabrication work on parts such as panels, brackets, enclosures, cabinets, covers, housings, switch plates, vents, hardware, and support fixtures. It fits specification-driven touch-up, small-part repainting, and coordinated finishing across metal, plastic, and other prepared surfaces when the goal is to follow the selected Fed Std 595C reference.

Because the color is fairly light and low in chroma, coverage can be influenced more by the substrate and existing finish than by the color itself. Dark primers, bare edges, texture, and uneven film build can affect how it reads after application, and touch-up beside aged or weathered coatings may show sheen or aging differences even when the color match is correct. For acceptance-sensitive work, a sample panel or a match to the existing part may be more useful than the reference chip alone.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.

We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]

The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.

The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
    1 = gloss
    2 = semi gloss
    3 = matt

The second digit indicates the color group;
      0 = Brown     5 = Blue
      1 = Red         6 = Grey
      2 = Orange   7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
      3 = Yellow     8 = Fluorescent
      4 = Green

The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.

While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 36440 *

What does Fed Std 595C 36440 mean on a MyPerfectColor order?

A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36440 is a government color reference target. On MyPerfectColor, it means you are ordering paint matched to that standard, not an official government coating system.

The code does not by itself define chemistry, gloss, surface preparation, corrosion protection, or formal approval status. If your project has a coating specification, confirm those requirements separately before ordering.

Can Fed Std 595C 36440 match an existing aged coating on my part?

Not always exactly. A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36440 is the reference color target, but an older in-service coating can look different because of weathering, fade, sheen change, texture, and prior paint layers.

If you are touching up next to an aged finish, a standard match may still be correct for the reference, but it may not visually disappear beside the surrounding surface. For critical repairs, a sample panel or an existing-part match can be the safer choice.

What product formats are available for Fed Std 595C 36440?

A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36440 can be ordered as MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in spray paint, touch-up paint, paint pens, brush-in-cap bottles, and other formats where available. The color code is the reference target, and the format is the delivery method.

Choose the format based on the part size, access, and how the paint will be applied. Small repairs often benefit from touch-up formats, while larger surfaces are usually better suited to spray application.

Is Fed Std 595C 36440 enough to choose the right coating for interior or exterior service?

No. Fed Std 595C 36440 tells you the color target, but it does not tell you whether the coating is right for interior use, exterior exposure, abrasion, chemical exposure, or a specific substrate.

First choose the product chemistry and coating system for the service environment, then use 36440 as the color reference. If the project involves metal, plastic, composite, or an existing coating, confirm compatibility before you order.

How long does Fed Std 595C 36440 take to dry and recoat?

Dry-to-touch, recoat time, and full cure are different stages, and the actual timing depends on the specific MyPerfectColor product format you choose for Fed Std 595C 36440.

Use the instructions for the exact product you buy and plan the job around the stated recoat and cure windows. The color code does not determine dry time by itself.
