A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36118 reads as a dark, subdued blue-gray with a cool cast and low saturation. It sits close to neutral gray, but the blue side stays visible enough to give repaired parts a cooler, technical look rather than a plain charcoal tone.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint in this color is useful for spray-applied touch-up and part finishing on panels, enclosures, brackets, switch covers, vents, rack components, fixtures, and fabricated hardware. It can also work for color-coding smaller equipment pieces, training parts, mock-ups, or restoration work where a government standard reference is the target.
Because the color is dark and low-chroma, the match usually reads as controlled rather than vivid. On smooth, matte, or satin substrates it will look cleaner and more even, while gloss, texture, and film build can make the same color appear deeper or slightly lighter in blue cast. Darker repairs may also show edges, sanding marks, and sheen changes more clearly than a lighter neutral.
This is a MyPerfectColor paint matched to the selected Fed Std 595C reference, not an official government coating system. For touch-up beside an aged existing finish, the standard code alone may not reproduce weathering or gloss loss, so surface condition and coating system should be considered when a close visual blend matters.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36118 is a government color reference target. It tells you which color to match, but it does not by itself define the coating chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion protection, or any formal approval status. When you order from MyPerfectColor, you are selecting a custom-matched paint made to match the selected Fed Standard reference, not an official government-issued coating system.
Not always. A correct match to Fed Std 595C 36118 can still look different next to an older in-service coating because weathering, fade, sheen, texture, film build, and the original coating system all affect appearance. If you are touching up beside an aged finish, a standard color match may be acceptable, but a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part may be the better choice when appearance is critical.
A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 36118 is commonly used for specification-driven work such as equipment parts, panels, brackets, enclosures, housings, carts, fixtures, color-coded hardware, mock-ups, and prototype parts. It is useful when a drawing, manual, procurement package, or maintenance document calls out the government color standard and you need a practical paint match in a usable format.
MyPerfectColor can supply a custom match to Fed Std 595C 36118 in spray paint and other product formats for these types of projects.
Before ordering, confirm the exact color code, the product type you need, the finish level, and the quantity. Fed Std 595C 36118 identifies the color reference, but your project still needs the right format and coating choice for the substrate and use case. Also review the color carefully before purchase, because custom-made color matches are not returnable or refundable.
Start with a clean, degreased surface, then scuff sand or abrade as needed so the paint has proper adhesion. If corrosion is present, remove or stabilize it before coating. For bare metal or mixed substrates, use a primer that is appropriate for the surface and the environment. If you are painting over an existing coating, test the paint on the actual substrate first to confirm adhesion and appearance before you coat a larger area.
MyPerfectColor uses an acrylic enamel which is a fast-drying durable coating suitable for interior or exterior use. MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to US Government Fed Std 595C 36118 enables you to conveniently achieve a professional spray-smooth finish in any color in any sheen. It sticks well to most surfaces including metal, plastics, powder-coatings, cabinets and primed or previously painted wood.
