Step 1: Select Paint Type / Application

A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 12243 reads as a strong warm orange with a red-leaning undertone and fairly deep value. It is not a pale safety orange; the color has noticeable saturation and a grounded, slightly earthy character rather than a clean neon look.

MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint to this government color reference can be used on sprayable parts such as brackets, enclosures, housings, panels, switch covers, vents, railings, tool carts, storage racks, and fabricated hardware. It is also a practical match for maintenance touch-up, color coding, prototype assemblies, mock-ups, and restoration work where a Fed Std 595C reference is called out in a drawing, manual, or procurement package.

Because this is a vivid orange, coverage can be more sensitive to substrate color and surface condition than with quieter neutrals. Dark, uneven, or textured bases may influence how many coats are needed, and gloss level can make film build and surface defects more noticeable. For acceptance-sensitive work, remember that a standard color reference does not automatically match an aged in-service coating or a project-specific approved finish.

MyPerfectColor supplies its own paint matched to the selected Fed Standard reference, not an official government-issued coating system. If your project is judged against an existing part or a controlled sample, finish, texture, and age should be considered along with the color code.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.

We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]

The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.

The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
    1 = gloss
    2 = semi gloss
    3 = matt

The second digit indicates the color group;
      0 = Brown     5 = Blue
      1 = Red         6 = Grey
      2 = Orange   7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
      3 = Yellow     8 = Fluorescent
      4 = Green

The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.

While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 12243 *

What does Fed Std 595C 12243 mean when I order MyPerfectColor paint for this color?

A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 12243 is a government color reference target. It tells you the color to match, but it does not by itself choose the coating chemistry, gloss, primer, application method, or approval status.

MyPerfectColor can make a custom-matched paint to match US Government Fed Std 595C 12243, but you still need to confirm the rest of the coating system for your project.

Will MyPerfectColor Fed Std 595C 12243 match look the same on a touch-up next to an older part?

Not always. If the existing coating has faded, weathered, changed sheen, or has a different texture, a correct match of Fed Std 595C 12243 can still look different next to the old finish.

For touch-up work, compare against the actual part when possible. For large or highly visible repairs, a full-part repaint or a match to the existing coating may give a better result than matching only the standard reference.

Is MyPerfectColor Fed Std 595C 12243 the right choice for interior, exterior, or heavy-use service?

The color code alone does not tell you whether the paint is right for interior use, exterior exposure, abrasion, or chemical contact. It only identifies the color reference.

Choose the MyPerfectColor format and coating type that fit the substrate and service environment for your part. If the project faces weather, wear, or cleaning chemicals, confirm the needed durability before you order a match of Fed Std 595C 12243.

How should I prep metal or an existing coating before applying Fed Std 595C 12243?

Clean and degrease the surface first. For repaint work over metal or an existing coating, remove loose paint, rust, and contamination before applying any match of Fed Std 595C 12243.

If the substrate or coating system requires it, scuff sanding can help adhesion. If you are working on a mixed or unknown surface, test a small area or the actual part before coating the full item.

If my project calls for approval, is a Fed Std 595C 12243 match enough?

Not always. If your procurement package, engineer, or customer requires a sample panel, approval panel, or a match to the existing part, the standard color code alone may not be enough for acceptance.

Before ordering MyPerfectColor paint matched to US Government Fed Std 595C 12243, confirm whether the job calls for only a color reference match or also a project-specific approval process.
