A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 31350 reads as a dark, warm red with a slight orange-red bias and a strong maroon depth. The low LRV gives it a noticeably deep appearance, while the chroma keeps it from drifting into a dull brown-red.

MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint to this government color standard is useful for spray-painting panels, brackets, enclosures, housings, switch covers, railings, hardware, and fabricated parts that need to follow a specified reference. It also fits color-coding work on carts, fixtures, tool components, prototype pieces, and restoration parts where the goal is a match to the selected Fed Std 595C code rather than an official government-issued coating system.

Because the color is dark and fairly saturated, surface prep and film build can affect how even it appears, especially on textured parts or where old repair edges remain visible. Finish choice can also change the reading of the color: gloss usually makes the red look deeper and can expose surface imperfections more clearly, while lower sheen can soften the contrast.

When the target is an existing coated part, keep in mind that weathering, fading, and sheen change can make a correct standard match look different from the surrounding surface. For acceptance-sensitive or repair-adjacent work, the project may need to be judged against the actual part, not only the color code.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.

We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]

The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.

The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
    1 = gloss
    2 = semi gloss
    3 = matt

The second digit indicates the color group;
      0 = Brown     5 = Blue
      1 = Red         6 = Grey
      2 = Orange   7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
      3 = Yellow     8 = Fluorescent
      4 = Green

The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.

While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ Fed Std 595C 31350 *

What does US Government Fed Std 595C 31350 specify, and what does it not specify?

US Government Fed Std 595C 31350 identifies a government color reference target. It tells you which color to match, but it does not by itself define the coating chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, application method, corrosion protection, or any formal approval status.

If your project calls out 31350, order MyPerfectColor paint matched to that reference and then confirm the rest of the coating system separately for your job requirements.

Why can US Government Fed Std 595C 31350 look different on an older part even when the code is correct?

Even if the color code is correct, an existing coating may have faded, weathered, changed sheen, or built up texture over time. That means a fresh match to US Government Fed Std 595C 31350 can still look different next to the old finish.

For touch-up beside an aged coating, a sample panel or a match to the existing part may be a better choice than relying on the standard reference alone. For a full repaint or new part, the 31350 reference is usually the right starting point.

How should I choose a product for US Government Fed Std 595C 31350 based on the service environment?

The color code does not tell you whether the project needs interior use, exterior exposure, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, or a specific substrate system. Those requirements have to be matched to the product you order for US Government Fed Std 595C 31350.

Choose the paint format and coating system for the actual environment first, then use 31350 as the color target. MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to the reference, but the job conditions still determine whether you need spray paint, touch-up paint, or another product type.

What kinds of projects commonly use US Government Fed Std 595C 31350?

A match of US Government Fed Std 595C 31350 is commonly used for specification-driven work such as equipment parts, panels, enclosures, brackets, housings, carts, fixtures, training aids, mock-ups, and other fabricated components.

If your drawing, maintenance instruction, or procurement package calls out 31350, order MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint to that reference so the part stays aligned with the specified government color standard.

How does finish affect the appearance of US Government Fed Std 595C 31350 after painting?

Gloss level, texture, and film build can change how US Government Fed Std 595C 31350 appears after application. A correct color match can still read differently if the finish is matte, satin, or glossy, or if the surface texture is not the same as the original part.

When appearance matters, match the color code and the finish requirement together. If the project is acceptance-sensitive, check whether the spec also calls for a specific sheen or a sample approval before ordering.
