Restoration Hardware’s Success

Restoration Hardware (Now known as RH) had a generally successful outlook, even in the beginning. Stephen Gordon founded the company in 1979 in Eureka, CA, because he found that high-quality hardware and fixtures were scarce or often unavailable. The company’s expansion went moderately well, with 47 stores open in 1998 when the company was widely known to the public, later increasing to 65 stores just by the end of that same exact year. Rapid expansion and success ensued, with over 100 stores across more than 30 states, garnering upwards of $365 million in total sales throughout the country.

Later on, sales would see some semblance of a decline, and Gary Friedman would join the company as CEO to help the company capitalize more on what they were working with, and potentially gain more traction than they had been, bringing the company into a more successful period of time once more. The founder, Gordon, would leave in 2005, but the company would regain its original pace of success, and it has stayed a constant in the home-furnishings market without many large issues for nearly a decade. Under the new title, RH, the company has produced a 70,000 square foot store which is generally chock full of their newest and highest quality amenities all the way from basic furniture to massive outdoor pools.

Behind the Design

The company is known to be generally competitive which is usually seen as a byproduct of its initial success and assurance of quality. In 2010 the marketing leads of the company stated that they would focus more on furnishing galleries at higher price ranges to distinguish themselves from other competitors. Store locations have been slowly shifting to using the term “gallery” to signify the change the company is trying to make universally for itself.

Use of Paint

Restoration Hardware, being the home-furnishing company that it is, produced its own paint until 2020 when it discontinued its paint line. Their available options typically went along with the furnishings purchased to fit a certain household theme. Colors were suggested to go along with a customer’s purchase and they tend to only offer those paints in certain styles given their status as a home-furnishings business. The quality of the paint was there, and often pre-applied to each piece of furniture depending on what a customer is looking to buy.

See What Our Customers Say

" I recently took down curtains in my walk in closet, and replaced them with shades. After patching the holes from the curtain rods, I realized I didn’t have anymore of the Restoration Hardware paint to touch up with. Then I began to search online for the paint codes so I could get the color mixed, as Restoration hardware no longer sells their paints. That is how I stumbled across your website! I was thrilled to see that not only did you have the color codes, but also mixed and sold the paint (I really didn’t want to take everything out of the closet to repaint with a different color!).

The paint arrived in just a few days, and is nearly a perfect match! If I look really closely I can see a slight difference in sheen, but the color is spot on. I am very happy with your product and would definitely use your company again in the future!

Thank you! Taking down curtains could have turned into a huge project if I had to take everything out and repaint. You have no idea how happy I was just having to touch up a few spots!"  - Bryan F.
