More About House Paint and Stain

Most paint used in homes or offices is water-based Acrylic or Latex paint. It cleans up with soap and water, has low odor and dries by exposure to air. There are a few dimensions to care about when it comes to choosing paint for your home or office: Interior or Exterior, Water-Based or Oil (Alkyd) based, Sheen (how shiny it is) and the Quality level.

Interior or Exterior

Paint typically used in homes is generally classified as Interior or Exterior. The paints are basically the same with one big difference: Exterior paint is made to better resist weather, the sun and mold/mildew.

Water or Solvent

The base of the paint is also important. Almost all paint used in homes and offices is water-based with some sort of Latex/Vinyl/Acrylic resin. These clean up with soap and water and are very easy to use. Some oil-based (Alkyd) paints are still used for some applications (such as painting metal) and clean up with mineral spirits.

Sheen

Sheen is also an important consideration. The sheen is simply how shiny the paint is after it dries. The sheen is a consideration between the aesthetic look/feel and the durability. A standard rule of thumb is the shinier the paint, the more durable/washable it will be. Another rule of thumb is the shiner the paint the poorer the coverage and the more imperfections you will see on your walls. Most of the time, people use a Matte or Eggshell on the walls, Ultra Flat or Flat on the ceilings and Satin or Semi-Gloss on trim and doors. The same goes for Exterior paint, with Flat being used mainly on the masonry or stucco surfaces, Low Lustre on the siding and Semi-Gloss on the doors, shutters and trim.

Sheen is not standardized. For the most part, terms are very similar, but each paint manufacturer names its sheens whatever it wants and there is no standard that manufacturers need to abide by for those names.

Flat/Matte

Flat has no shine. It isn’t as washable, so you would use this on ceilings and other surfaces that don’t receive much or any wear. Matte looks the same as Flat, but signifies that it is a very hard and durable finish so you get the look of Flat, but the durability of an Eggshell.

Eggshell

Eggshell finish Is named Eggshell because it has the sheen of an Eggshell. It has a very dull angular sheen that you can see when looking along the length of a wall but not straight on. It was the original “scrubbable” finish made for walls that provided some of the durability of a Gloss but helped hide some of the imperfections like a Flat.

Low Lustre

Low Luster is a little shinier than Eggshell.

Satin/Pearl

Satin has a shine and is like a dull Semi-Gloss. It is great for doors and trim as well as for walls when someone wants shiny walls.

Semi-Gloss

Semi-Gloss is usually the glossiest finish people use on their doors and trim and is shiny.

Gloss

Gloss normally isn’t used in homes and offices. It is more expensive and doesn’t cover as well, but it is available.

Quality

The quality denotes the quality of the materials used in the paint and usually translates to how well the paint covers (more expensive paint covers in fewer coats), has better color retention (fades less over time) and is more durable (stronger paint film is more resistant to scuffs, stains and more easily cleaned). 100% Acrylic is normally the best coating. Acrylic is a very strong plastic resin. Lower quality/less expensive paints will normally be some blend of Acrylic with Vinyl and Latex, or outright Latex and/or Vinyl.

Benjamin Moore Aura Bath and Spa

Aura Bath and Spa is a super premium 100% Acrylic Interior paint designed for use in a wet environment like a bathroom with a shower. Baths and Spas require a special kind of paint. Wet environments like bathrooms and spas place extra demands on paint and need extra durability, more mildew resistance, more washability and resistance to surfactant leaching. This paint extends the new revolutionary color science technology of Aura to offer superior bathroom and spa paint in a Matte finish. This paint offers guaranteed two-coat coverage with any color over even an unprimed new sheetrock wall. It is super durable, low odor, super coverage, super-time-saving paint.

If you have a bathroom with a shower, more than likely you've noticed drip marks on the wall that just doesn't come off. This is due to two things: first, the water itself has minerals in it that remain on the surface once the water evaporates. And second, the water leaches surfactants from the paint film. These surfactants come from the universal colorants that paint companies use to tint colors. The Benjamin Moore Aura Bath and Spa paint uses revolutionary new paint technology that doesn't rely on surfactants and therefore won't create these drip marks. Moreover, this new paint is extra washable and durable and therefore will improve your ability to remove any mineral deposit build up from your walls. It is also super mildew resistant.
