Recreating a Racing Legend, One Inch at a Time
Jim, a skilled model builder and racing history enthusiast, set out to replicate the University of Pittsburgh Road Racing Team’s 1970 Camaro, a vehicle driven by Bob Fryer that competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona and other Trans-Am/SCCA events during the early 1970s.
Getting the body details right was important, but Jim knew that the paint color was critical to the authenticity. After researching, he discovered that the car's true shade wasn’t the expected Sunoco Blue—but instead Pitt Royal Blue (Pantone 661C).

Accurate detailing and paint matching make this 1:18 replica stand out.
Finding the Perfect Match
Jim found MyPerfectColor during his search for a supplier who could custom-mix this Pantone shade in a high-quality spray format. We recommended our self-etching primer to prep the metal surface, followed by the Pitt Royal Blue spray paint, and topped with a clear automotive coat.
“The paint color was perfect! I also gave you credit on the ‘TV’ panel at the back of the car.”
Why It Matters
This is more than a model. It's a tribute to racing history, executed with dedication and precision. Jim’s story highlights:
- The power of accurate color matching in historical replication
- The importance of high-quality materials, even at scale
- The joy of seeing a vision come to life
