Hi,
Thanks SO much for the photos -- that makes all the difference in giving suggestions to you. I can now see how the rooms relate, etc. After viewing the photos, here are my thoughts. I'm going to post these in 3 parts, so that they don't get cut off.

Because you have a love of colors (several of them,) and your home has many intersecting walls visible when you walk in the door, I'm going to suggest a few colors, but more of a plan than a scheme. You can adjust the colors once you sample them, to get just the right ones in there.

For your fireplace accent wall, that is a great place for your red or plum color as it will show off the fireplace. I think with the other colors, the red should be a bit cooler:

In your kitchen, I can see that you have some green paint on the wall, but I suspect that it's too heavy for what you had in mind. I do see that you have a green design on the flooring, so I'll suggest that the color in the dining/kitchen area work with that. The way your walls join, you'll want to keep the kitchen and dining area color the same. You can even choose to take the color down the hall if you'd like, or use the unifying color I'll suggest in installment 3 of this message.

I was intrigued by your mention of liking aqua, and think a color like that could be smashing with those beautiful light cabinets, and the sand counters, while keeping it green enough to work with the floors.

Here are a few colors to sample:
Benjamin Moore Dreamcatcher 640

Benjamin Moore Warm Springs 682

Benjamin Moore Let it Rain 639
http://www.myperfectcolor.com/en/color/5582_Benjamin-Moore-639-Let-It-Rain

These colors are just an idea of what you can do in the kitchen/dining area to pop the color. Next is the unifying color for the other walls.

Yes, I have your photos. I think that what looked like a fireplace in your photo, must be an entertainment center? It's on the gold wall to the left. ;)

the green is a mistake...big time....don't want to do green and the floor will be covered so not a concern

yes, the brown looking box in front of the window and on the gold wall is an entertainment center...chocolate to match the sofa...

And of course, you'll want to sample your colors before purchasing, as the lighting is different in person.

Here are a few ideas for a unifying color for the remaining walls. This plan is more like a recipe, in that you can adjust the colors so that they're just right.

Benjamin Moore Warm

PS- I would treat that wall with the entertainment center as the accent wall in that room.

the entertainment center sits on a wall with a window...would this be an adequate accent wall?...i didnt get the unifying color i just got Benjamin Moore Warm .. no link attached

Sorry. I just realized what had happened to my previous answer to you, as it just cut off once again. The first color I was suggesting for the unifying wall was Warm and Toasty, but it uses an ampersand, which apparently cuts off the rest of the message. I'll recreate it here without the ampersand (quirky!)

That should work this time. Hope this is helpful. One thing you can do if you find that you're still stumped by the colors, is to pick a pattern or a piece of art in your home to pull a scheme from. I saw a print in the dining area to the left of your kitchen cabinets, that had many of the colors you love in there. If you just can't seem to pull a scheme together, you can absolutely use that as inspiration.

Diana

Yes, a window wall would be fine for an accent, as it look as if the furniture is facing in that direction in room. You could also use the front wall as you walk in, where it frames the kitchen, but then it opens up issues of where to stop that color and start the rest, but it can be done.

Diana

my head is spinning here....so can you review once more about where i should place each color?...and are you suggesting the wall separating the Kitchen and LR should be Aqua? and what color is the Accent wall? What about the space above cabinets, does this remain white or Aqua? What do you think about the wall behind the sofa and the wall behind the plum settee in dining room being accent walls?? Diana, I'm so excited !! you really know your colors..I luvluvluv the Aqua!!!

I believe it would be awesome to make the center wall where the bar separates the two rooms and accent color....after reviewing your notes again...what do you think? and should it be Aqua!!!

i will share pics when it's all done... :)

Hi,
Glad to hear that you're excited about your painting project! Be sure to test the colors, of course, to get just the right ones. I can't stress that enough, as the paint could look different based on your lighting. I recommend using a sample board for the colors you're considering, because it will help you decide where to put what color, and can move them around the rooms. This is very valuable when you're trying to decide which walls to accent, as well as seeing how it would look with specific pieces of furniture.

In answer to your questions. I was initially thinking that the kitchen and dining area could be the aqua color, then use the neutral on the hall and living room walls that aren't accented. But, I also like the idea of perhaps using the aqua that you choose, on that front wall separating the spaces, and perhaps using the neutral color in the kitchen (whatever color you choose, paint it above the cabinets as well,) with the aqua accenting that wall behind the settee in the dining area.

If you're going to use the aqua on that cut-out wall, then that would be the only accent in the living room area (which is fine, because you do love color in your accessories, so this would be a nice backdrop.) So you have a choice of using one of the darker/rich colors I've suggested for that wall, or just stick with a neutral aqua for both rooms. I hope that this makes sense -- I know we've been discussing many options. I think that if you can sample the paint using sample boards, it will really help with the decisions.

Yes, I would love to see the pics when you're finished.

Diana

Color Scheme

hello...
after weeks of racking my brain trying to learn color theory i'm about to give up and throw in the towel. how utterly frustrating!

from my front door you can view 4 rooms 1 LR 2 Hallway 3 Kitchen/Open Bar 4 Dining Room with Nook area and 3 windows in the distance all from the front entry way view...a beautiful open floor plan with Bad Color...

i'm desperate to learn how to pull all my rooms together and make them blend...with possibly the Kitchen being the focal point since it's situated in the center of the living space.

I love color and lots of it but it's important to make the feeling rich and inviting sortal like eating a decadent dessert and sipping tea in front a fire. I love rich tones like purple and yellow but i also like raspberries and pops of color in every room alternating to pull it together. I like to be able to change accent colors (pillows etc.) on occasion, especially when the seasons change.

my furniture is a plum settee in the dining and a rich chocolate leather sofa with red undertones. I like clean lines and minimal wall art and furniture.

can u please help me in this dilemma? i've read articles for weeks and i just want to make my walls happy...and me too :)

Hello! I hope that I can help you in your dilemma. Sometimes it seems the more we read, and the more colors we look at, it gets harder to choose. If it's possible, please share a photo from that front door view, so I can get a feeling for the space.

I think I have a grasp of the vibe and the colors you're describing. I can definitely make some suggestions based on your description so far. Based on your description, without seeing the space, I would most likely suggest only one or two colors for the four rooms, with perhaps the kitchen being the second color. Because you like to change accessories out when inspiration strikes you, and your color tastes are rich, the simplest way to unify things is to choose one or two colors. In each room, the color would look a bit different because of the lighting would be different, so you would still get that unique look in each room, without having to coordinate many colors. If the color you chose as your unifying color was a bit darker, you could always order the hallway paint in a slightly lighter version if the hall has no windows.

It sounds as if you have wonderful style instincts, and could really achieve your color goals by simplifying this. I'm not sure what colors you have been considering, but my first instinct would be to go with a rich gold, or even a contemporary green. You could also consider a rich neutral beige, but I'd go toward a warmer version of this. This would create a beautiful and unified setting for the plum settee, and chocolate leather sofa. Because your furnishings and accessories have the colors you love, the paint can be a backdrop for them.

Here are a few color ideas that came to mind. They might look similar on your computer screen, but they each have their own nuance. So it's best to sample the paints you're considering.

Benjamin Moore Warm

i'm not too certain how to properly distribute all the colors in a color scheme/pallette for my space and since i have no trim to paint how then would i balance these colors? there are 1 or 2 slight wall variations but that's it...and the walls in the kitchen could be emphasized but that covers it...so when you say 1 or 2 colors in an open floor plan..i agree but somehow feel cheated out of being able to use all the awesome colors in a pallette...getting excited Diane :)

Hi,
Hoping that you were able to see my entire response, with the colors I suggested, as it's cut off in the message thread now. I had suggested fewer colors, since you you can see everything when you first walk in. Sounds like you have some wonderful colors already going in your furniture and accessories. Have you considered accent walls? That would be a great way to add a more dramatic color to the rooms, and still keeping a cohesive look. Let me know if you'd like to explore that, and I can suggest something for you.
Diana

hi diane...yes, would love an accent wall in LR...no, i didn't see the colors you suggested and was wondering if they did get cut off...i love your ideas of keeping the color flowing through out the space and unified but i am aiming for it to give a feeling of richness...i sent several pics of my space ... did u get them? also, what to color the kitchen would love to have it blend with the counter top and thru out the rest of the rooms with spashes of color complimenting it....let me know when u view the pics and thanks ... excited in asheville
